Favorite Potato Varieties

I am already planning next years garden (some seed varieties need to be ordered early or you won't get them at all) and it got me thinking about what kinds of potatoes that other ZooChatters might like, given that this is and international environment of sorts. I know that there are kinds of potatoes commonly grown in New England that might not even be known in other parts of the world. It sounds very obscure and odd but I really am interested. I know that there are members in the Southern Hemisphere who must be gardening right now, I am especially interested in what gets grown down there.

Here we have kinds like russet and Green Mountain (which is the world's greatest potato, as far as I am concerned) also Kennebec (the second greatest potato), and types like Yukon Gold and Dark Red Norland (okay), and lets not forget fingerlings (expensive and worth it.)

I've never heard of Green Mountain, Kennebec or Dark Red Norway varieties. I prefer plain ol russet. What about fingerlings makes their higher price worth it? I've never had one but have eyed them in the store quite a few times.

They just have the most wonderful texture in the world, kind of waxy. t just makes them awesome. Well, after Green Mountain and Kennebec (which are dry and fluffy, the former more than the latter, which almost has a hint of vanilla.)

I once saw Winged Eel Fingerling play with Captain Beefheart, but I don't recall any of hint of potato in his playing.

Thank you. I don't know that I can get those in Arizona but I've never looked. We get Russet, Yukon Gold in both large and mini and Red in both large and mini plus fingerlings. At Thanksgiving I made a buttermilk mashed potato with Yukon Gold and only use reds in a recipe. Russets are often baked or mashed.

That is so, very, cool.

I know nothing about potatoes, except I like eating them, but I find the existence of this thread on a zoo forum strangely comforting and life-affirming. For the record, I'm sober.
