Toronto Zoo Former Toronto Zoo Animals

Oh no, poor guy :( 16 is no spring chicken for a giraffe, but he was by no means ancient, either.

This is a crushing blow for the North American population, as he was still the most genetically valuable male by a fairly significant margin. And of course very sad for the zoo staff and community as well.

Hopefully he managed to get one or both of the cows pregnant before his passing, and if nothing else, he does lave behind a fairly robust legacy of descendants!

That's sad Michael passed. He was a powerhouse breeder and his kids are starting to breed themselves. Fear not about the genetics though. The new number one bull in North America is our own Matu now! There will be a huge push on then to get him across the border this year. He cant breed for a few more years but they will want him in a spot where they can easily move him when his day comes.

Excellent news! That baby will be super valuable to the population. Grandma Samantha does have a number of descendants and Charles is pretty well represented but the baby's father Willie B Jr. is one of the top ranked males so that baby is gonna be so important to the population. Really good news especially since its been so long since she had her first son Suliaman, due to the unfortunate demise of her first group in Milwaukee.

I still wish I could've seen Penelope one last time--I felt pretty attached to her cause I got to see her when she was just a big recently born jellybean, and I was even among the many who voted for "Penelope" to be her name. But I'm just happy that she's comfy at her new home and I hope she has a long, wonderful life there.

Farewell, Penelope, do your best! ;w;/

Gorilla Shalia (daughter of Charles and Samantha), became an unexpected grandma not long after becoming a second time mom. Turns out her son Sulaiman has actually been her daughter all along. Columbus had a little surprise when they came in and Sully had a baby in her arms. The baby is a girl. A DNA test is needed to determine the father as she lives with silverback Mac and younger boys Kamoli and JJ. This is the first great grandchild for both Charles and Samantha and if it is Kamoli's then she will also be a great granddaughter for Barney too!

Gorilla thought to be male surprises zoo with birth

Masai giraffe Shomari/Michael, who passed away at the Santa Barbara Zoo on February 15, is a grandfather again. His son, Chad, sired a male calf who was born at Franklin Park Zoo on July 14.

Zoo New England

Unfortunately his granddaughter, Zuri, sired by his son Dane at Cameron Park Zoo (mentioned in post 206 above), passed away on July 22, days after her mother Penelope passed away on July 19.

Out of curiosity, does anyone remember when the emus left? My parents and I were talking about the walk through and the subject of us missing the emus came up. I remember not seeing the remaining individuals in 2015 or any signs she was still there. Just curious.

@HowlerMonkey I believe the emus left sometimes around the mid-10s, maybe during the winter between 2014 and 2015

That’s what I was thinking as I’m positive the signs were down in 2015 when I visited but could not remember. My parents and I were actually talking just last night how we took species like the Impalas and Wisent for granted as they were all animals we remembered seeing being active and showy (We always saw the Impalas and rarely the Kudus). The emus always seemed interested in hanging out with visitors when we were there which we loved. Sorry if I’m getting off track with the thread.

@HowlerMonkey You're damn right the TO Zoo has lost countless species over the past couple decades and many former animals. I would love to see the emus make a return. Some other former species that we lost have been the snowy owls, mandrills, bongos, and probably so much more. As well you're right the kudu are so hard to pot and they have such a big exhibit which would be nice to bring back some of the old savanna species to liven up that exhibit.
