Fort Worth Zoo Fort Worth Zoo News

Can you elaborate on the subspecies division? How is the US population doing?
I don't know the whole story, but I remember seeing in the Fort Worth Zoo gallery a comment saying that Fort Worth's Southern Rockhoppers are Eudyptes chrysocome filholi while the vast majority of southern rockhoppers in US collections are Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome. the zoo itself doesn't list them at a subspecies level on the signage however

Only two European collections are listed as having E.c. filholi on ZTL, and none for North America. This could be worth updating provided with a relevant source.

here is the post I was referring to, stating that they are filholi. hope this helps, I wonder if asking the zoo for confirmation could also work.

Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) - ZooChat
On the basis of one individual's comment. I suppose the zoo or those managing the studbook do know the origins of their founder birds.

I add on the Birdlife sheet on southern rockhoppers for reference and a pay per view science paper on population trends:
A) Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) - BirdLife species factsheet
B) Population trends of the Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome) at the northern limit of its breeding range: Isla Pingüino, Santa Cruz, Argentina - Polar Biology

Yeah, the population at Fort Worth is a combination of birds from other zoos that come in as E.c. chrysocome given that are derived from a population of that subspecies. Some birds at Fort Worth were bred at Fort Worth so of course they are same subspecies as their parents. I don't think subspecies is in any doubt. All info here is from the studbook

Fort Worth has both chrysocome and filholi, most likely. Several of their individuals show characteristics of the latter. Some of Fort Worth’s birds came from SeaWorld San Antonio which also has (had?) the subspecies: Catalogue of Penguins in Captivity Worldwide
If you look in the gallery for the zoo you can see individuals that appear to be of one subspecies or the other.

If you tell me which of fort worth rockhoppers came from San Antonio I'm happy to find out if they are of known subspecies tho itll need to wait til Monday. The studbook doesn't list hatch location which makes it less simple to identify. But if fort worth and SSP both think the FW birds are southern thats where my betting money lies!

Update: Sekani has rejoined the troop and Gracie is being trained to be a surrogate mother to Jameela. Jameela is now thriving, but is still being kept behind the scenes at the moment.
Mama update! Many of you have been asking how Jameela’s mother, Sekani, is doing post cesarean section and we are happy to report she is doing very well!... | By Fort Worth Zoo | Facebook
