Georgia Aquarium Georgia Aquarium News

The beluga cam is offline currently. I am cautiously optimistic we may hear some good news about Whisper and a calf soon. The camera has been consistently online during the day and evening for the past several weeks while the aquarium has been on beluga baby watch.

As suspected when the beluga cam was turned off, Whisper was in labor!

Whisper gave birth to a calf on Sunday, May 17, 2020. The Georgia Aquarium was able to keep it under wraps for over a week with being closed for COVID-19. I assume the 1 week milestone suggests the calf is doing well and nursing well. Sounds like a prolonged labor that may have required some intervention perhaps.

What's the third shark they show with the red light? Is it a tiger? Kind of looks like a small white, I cant tell tho

Also sneak peeks of this upcoming expansion would be shown during Shark Week on Discovery Channel.

Very interesting! I know for a fact that Monterey Bay was exploring how to safely exhibit juvenile tigers from Hawaii back in ~2007-2008 but it never came to fruition. I wonder if Georgia has figured out a way...

It hasn't really been done successfully in an aquarium outside Hawaii where they have, uh, steady access to specimens (a couple of places with large outdoor lagoons have been successful as well.)

That's definitely a juvenile tiger at :34 though. Curious to see what they've come up with.

Thanks. White shark was a long shot but I never know with that facility (Ocean Voyager was originally supposed to exhibit N. right whales). Depending how long the shark(s) have been there they look good. I got to see the ones in Camden before they weren't on exhibit. Unfortunately their they were tore up around their rostrums.

Ah cool. Believe Camden was the last aquarium to try, and did alright, but damage to the rostrum isn't surprising - that's one of the big problems with exhibiting highly migratory shark species.

Camden was and Shark Reef at Mandalay prior. From what I understand it is the biggest problem. I know Mote Aquarium at one point had some as well but that's been at least 20 years. I will say, GA would be the ones to figure it out.

Agree its great hammerheads, it's been one of the most desired species from the public since they left OV
