Georgia Aquarium Georgia Aquarium News

With this transfer to SeaWorld Orlando, how many great hammerheads are in Atlanta? Also, were there ever any breeding attempts involving the animals at SHARKS! Predators of the Deep?
If I recall, Georgia had 8, so they should have 6 left. As far as I'm aware no attempts to breed the Great Hammerhead Sharks were made. It would be difficult as I'd imagine any pups might be eaten by the Tiger Sharks they share the habitat with. SeaWorld has two males now, so no breeding for now at least, I do know that the AZA wants more captive breeding of sharks, as a critically endangered species I hope breeding the species is considered.

What is the status of the whale sharks here? At least one left? Are they planning to get more? It’s been a few years since I have been there. The whale sharks were impressive! And the belugas.

There are still two; I'd imagine they're not planning to get more currently. It will be interesting to see what the future holds, as Georgia is basically mainly known for Whale Sharks.

Yeah, I think Taiwan indicated they would not entertain another permit nor do I think NOAA would issue one either. Not sure Georgia thinks it's worth the hassle to get another pair or not, but time will tell. Even without whale sharks, you'd be hard-pressed to find an aquarium in the Western Hemisphere which doesn't encompass almost every popular aquarium resident

In that case I am happy that I have seen one. They are quite impressive. I know they can be difficult to breed in captivity. In fact, I don’t think there has been one born in captivity ever.

Margaritaville Vacation Club Dolphin Coast. So now theres Margaritaville restaurants, hotels, a musical, and a dolphin exhibit. Jimmy Buffet.

This is a waste of valuable space. Where is it going?

It's apparently already open as a zoo nerd friend of mine visited two days ago. It's a basic netted aviary on the pathway to the dolphin stadium.

I saw it today, it's OK looking, it takes up part of the walkway area, so it's in a good spot. Today I saw all of the inhabitants......one scarlet ibis. I'm sure they will fill it out. The sign also noted rosette spoonbill, but they were not there.

I went to Atlanta 10 days ago (July 17th) they had two roseate spoonbills and four scarlet ibis. It's kind of a filler exhibit. Bit short on bird perching but not a horrible space which is good because it must have cost a lot. There's an off-exhibit holding space also. I was trying to think of species that would work well in there additionally but given the concrete and gravel substrate plus the small pool there's not much that will fit well. Definitely not an exciting space for birds to live but it's spacious.

Georgia making no public announcement for this death seems odd. I see no press announcement nor social media post about Greyson. I know every aquarium/zoo have different media policies, especially with high profile animal deaths, but being transparent always seems like the better course. They could be waiting for more official necropsy results, but it always take a considerable amount of time short of anything obvious. We'll see how this plays out...

It also may be dependent on who owns the animal. Grayson may have been there on breeding loan. I would have to go back and look at MMIR to see who owned the beluga.
