South Lakes Wild Animal Park Giant otter at South Lakes

Think a male from Beauval has been assigned.

I'm quite certain that Beauval do not hold giant otters, i think it is Doue la Fontaine that are the sole holders of giant otter in France.

I dont like the enclosure!

I certainly agree with that, like a public swimming pool built in the fifties, very functional:eek:, but this will just be the winter accommodation, there will be an outdoor enclosure, where i'm sure they will spend most of their time..

I love how the article says there are 'only 2 in the UK'.

I make four... :D

1.1 @ Chestnut centre
1.1 @ Chester
0.1 @ South Lakes

Would this be how it stands now?
Nisha, does this mean a second male at Chester, or is it 2 females at Chester just now?

From what I gathered Chester's male has yet to arrive and they just had 0:1 until then.

Yup - this is my understanding too.

So:

1.1 Chestnut
0.1 Chester
0.1 South Lakes

...for now!

1.1 + 1.1 + 0.1 = 4, my maths was never brilliant, sorry for any confusion

I think this is great news and I hope they become established in the UK soon, is Chesters exhibit finished now?

Think a male from Beauval has been assigned.

The male from France (still a juvenile, born last July at Doue La Fontaine) is related to the female at South Lakes and the studbook/EEP would not assign him to go to there. A male offspring from Hamburg would be a much better choice.

Are there unrelated lines within Europe? I was under the impression that the small population derived from limited stock and all were related in some way.

You are right, the stock is very limited, but it is still possible to form unrelated pairs, as the former breeding pair at Dortmund and their offspring were/are not related to the pair at Hagenbeck and their offspring. Hagenbeck has a male from Cali/Colombia and a female from Bolivia while Dortmunds former pair had ancestors in Brasilia/Brazil.
