Giant Panda Future in America

I sometimes feel like the trash talk of San Francisco on this site is a bit... excessive. There's a joke that goes around on the internet to the effect of "Nobody hates Star Wars as much as Star Wars fans." Sometimes, it seems like nobody hates zoos as much as zoochatters...

The San Francisco Zoo is a very badly mismanaged zoo, and has been for decades. It is a truly bad zoo, and the notion that they are getting giant pandas is appalling.

That is not an exaggeration.

A new children's book called Panda Comes to America (Chan, 2024) is being released on Amazon this week. A Giant Panda eating fries in San Francisco! Is this foreshadowing pandas arriving at San Francisco Zoo? :p

Here's a synopsis of the book:

"Get ready for an adventure as Panda Comes to America! Join Panda as he embarks on a journey to San Francisco, where he discovers the wonders of the Golden City. In this heartwarming children's book, Panda makes new friends, explores iconic landmarks, and experiences the vibrant culture of San Francisco.

As Panda explores the city, he encounters friendly faces and learns about the rich history of each place he visits. From riding on the iconic cable cars to marveling at the majestic Golden Gate Bridge, Panda's journey is filled with excitement and joy.

Perfect for young children, Panda Comes to America is a delightful tale that will captivate little ones and spark their curiosity about the world around them. Whether you're planning a family trip to San Francisco or simply looking for a charming story to share with your little explorers, this book is sure to be a hit."

I bet there's probably some truth to this. I think this is becoming more and more common in hobby circles and online communities overall. There's always an outsider assumption that "fans" are easily pleased or even vapid consumers and I think many become progressively more critical or perfectionist to offset that assumption (especially for media-based fandoms, such as Star Wars) and there are always people who want to only experience the 'best' of something but don't actually have any love for the mediocre. I don't agree with gatekeeping but sometimes it can really skew things to let in people who like only a very small slice of the pie to begin with. There's also the narcissism of small differences effect...

I thought to tell the update with the pandas at SD zoo.
The new attraction called "Panda ridge" will be open to the public at the 8th of august.
There will be 3 ways to see the pandas. For more information Julio C Castro has posted an explanation on the SD zoo news 2024 thread.
Also no tripods or monopods will be allowed in the attraction.
So excited for the opening!!!

That’s why I find Columbus quite likely, they don’t have the room though.
I would argue that Columbus absolutely has the room. They own land for expansion that could, if the need would arise, be used for pandas. I know they have hopes to expand Asia Quest sometime in the future so I wouldn't 100% write off a panda exhibit for them in the future.

What do they plan to do after the renovated NA section?

Does Memphis have a future with this species? When I went last (Ya Ya and Le Le were there) I was told by a worker that while Ya Ya and Le Le weren’t going to stay the zoos would be getting new ones. Memphis facilities are below par for the species and they don’t seem to really have much room to expand the exhibit. I can’t see them having a future but what do you guys think?
