Yes, it's true!!! Personally I'm not sure where they will fit in and whether there is really room for such big animals... hmmm, time will tell! Here is an extract from the latest news update on the Blackpool Zoo website:

I did mention the magic word - giraffes - earlier, and yes, they are returning to Blackpool Zoo after about 10 years. A new house will be built on the south side of the zoo, so, apologies for the disruption, but it will be worth it. We're all very excited, so watch this space for more news of their arrival.

Other developments mentioned are a new jungle-themed play barn and improvements to the car park, no mention of any other new additions to the animal collection yet sadly.

That is good news, I hope they can get a pure group and not more hybrids.

Which is the south side, down where the paddocks are? I hope they make a good job of it, a mixed species enclosure would be nice.

That's right Chris. Only one third of the available land at Blackpool has been developed. I assume the giraffes will go somewhere behind the vicuna and sitatunga.

If what i was told a few years ago is true the new giraffe house has been built on the spare land at the bottom of the tiger enclosure as for if they are getting pure that was the plan then as they owned a pair of Roths that were on breeding loan at another collection at the time.

Thats great news to hear, i havent been in Blackpool since about 2002 so its about time i went for a visit

Not that i know of if it is it will be the 3 time in 6 years,it was bought last year by the same group that runs several zoos and marine parks in Spain.

I hope this rumour isn't true - although I suppose if someone with really good ideas and lots of money took it on, then it could be for the best. However, the bringing in of giraffes along with other changes, would make selling the zoo now seem a rather odd move.

Despite it getting criticised a fair bit, I do like Blackpool Zoo and I think they're brought in some good new animals in the last few years. Good luck to them I say!

Exxxxcellent! :D I'm going on holiday to Blackpool for a week at the end of August/beginning of September, and now I'm looking forward to it more than ever!

Now, any news on when the aardvarks are due to arrive I wonder? If the aardvarks AND giraffes are on show when I go, wow, I'll be VERY happy!!! :D

The new giraffe enclosure is fantastic and the giraffes look very happy in it looking like thay have been there for years .
ived been up to the zoo alot in the past few weeks and seeing the progress it has made in that short time makes me very happy im now looking to the future of the zoo with the new sealion pool and penguines , ardvarks and i hope rhino !!!!!!!

Sounds good! Did you get any photos?

Where exactly is the exhibit? There isn't alot of land behind the tigers 9though it was always overgrown), certainly without cutting into the vicuna/tapir exhibt. Have they done anything to alter the substrate as those back paddocks get very swampy in the wet.

Do you know where the aardvarks will be going, and are they to be shown in a nocturnal display?

Are there any specific plans for the sealions - new exhinit or refurbed old exhibit? I would presume a new penguin exhibit located nearby?

i would like to see an exhibit similar to Rheine zoo, a walk through aviary with Humboldt's penguin and Inca tern.

the giraffes are next to the lions (old tiger side) the area is now called GIRAFFE HIGHTS. its at the back of the tapir enclosure.
there is a large field and paddock next to the main house with a wood walkway up the right hand side you can view the giraffes from inside or outside the house at head level and ground level.(will try and post sum pics soon).

not sure when the aardvarks arrive or where thay will go.

the sealion pool is to be rebuilt with underwater viewing on the same site its on now with penguins next door.

"not sure when the aardvarks arrive or where thay will go."

I believe they are arriving this week and are going into the children's zoo. possibly to the place vacated by the meerkats, therefore no 'nocturnal' exhibit methinks....
