The website is not up to date and after reading the studbook for this species am interested to know any updates on them?

It highlights that alex, zoey, vietta and titto (in no particular order) have not yet bred but to keep genetic diversity these animals could do with breeding, being wild born.

zoey has breed. she has a daughter kim with jake

Ooops yes forgot about that, will be interesting to see where Kim goes with Zoey being from Pingtung and Jake being born into the European breeding programme.

Kim's the only new baby, like nicola08 said. Peanut and Pung-Yo might breed again before long, since it's been almost three years since Tien was born. Fingers crossed that they do :D

However, though I don't disagree with MW wanting to release the gibbons back in the wild, seeing as we've got them, we might as well keep them to bolster the breeding population. They're lovely gibbons, but I don't think we've got many in Europe :(

Peanut and Pung-yo have a daughter (I think) born 18th Feb this year.

MW really need to update their website :D

It must have been a short pregnancy or an unexpected one-no hints were dropped in the last Monkey Life series, and I think that one was filmed in about August 2008.

Did you mean you do disagree?

I find it strange that there part of the studbook but obviously they are not going to go anywhere else if they want to release them

...I think I missed out a word (again). Sorry Taun!

I think it's an admirable idea to want to release the gibbons back into the wild, but at the same time, there are so few GCGs in captivity (as far as I'm aware), that I think we'd be better off keeping those that we've got, especially since the wild ones are endangered. At least if/when the wild ones reach critically endangered numbers, we'd have an established captive population (hopefully) :)

Someone at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park told me last week that they were expecting to get some gibbons in 2010 (species unknown) and that they'd be coming from Monkey World. So maybe they will be moving some of their animals on to other collections? If YWP get golden-cheeked gibbons then I'll be a VERY happy chappy! :D

This figures are as of the end of 2007.

Northen White-cheeked Gibbon (Nomascus Leucogenys) - 49.23.7
Southern White-cheeekded Gibbon (Nomascus siki) - 7.2.2
Red-cheeked Gibbon (Nomascus gabriellae) - 41.39.12

So not that rare but still the numbers are quite small but the captive population were not started until 1968.

I very much doubt they will be Golden cheeked gibbons, as all but two or three that are wild born (except young they have breed there). with MW holding 5.5 (possible 11 with the baby this year).

I would think its more likely to be either Siamangs, agile or lar gibbons.

There *could* be a Golden Cheeked Gibbon moving up to Yorkshire, since Tien's old enough to leave his parents. The only thing that makes me think it might not be him, or any of MW's, is because MW doesn't seem to like sending their critters out to join breeding progammes. However, if what you've heard is true Sand Cat, then maybe MW is changing tack :D

Tien and his parents are mention to be going back to vietnam so I very much doubt it.

I asked what gibbons Yorkshire Wildlife Park would get and the chap said he thought probably lars because you can't get rarer ones when you are starting out but he was just guessing but it's a good point.

MW have Nike, Ella and Kitty. Kitty is with Paul who is an agile gibbon, she's young so it'd be nice if she could be found a mate. Some of YWPs ringtails came from MW so maybe it is possible.

Lar gibbons are more common so I would be surprised if they acquired anything different.

I agree with you there, Kitty is a waste of a young female being put with another species of gibbon, I would much rather her to be paired up with a suitable mate of her own kind. But that then leaves Paul on his own and im not sure where Monkey World could source another agile gibbon, ideas anyone?

Twycross, is the best place in the UK. They should really cut down on the number of Gibbons they hold to be able to rebuild better homes for them.

monkeyworld?
i think they should have bigger enclosurs just like the simangs have and the gibbons at the botttom
