Great Hoof-Stock/Antelope Enclosures/Collection

As to why the consolidation (not just hoofstock, but many classes of animals) it is to sustain long term breeding programs. For the genetic diversity to maintain herds into the future, you have to have a large number, which requires multiple zoos working with any given species.

As to what incentive there would be for people to travel to zoos, you seem to be under the misconception that us ZooChat fanatics represent the general public. I can guarantee you that (outside of this website) hardly anyone plans their vacations around zoo visits. Zoos generally cater to local or regional visitors, which is in fact their demographic.

i have changed my mind on the hoofstock collection for my future zoo here is the list, its a tad more modest and un-ambitious, please tell me what you think of this collection idea

Bad new guys. Birmingham Zoo lost their greater kudu and their sitatunga. They went to another zoo. Their "hoofstock" collection now consists of giraffes, zebra, and one thompson gazelle. And they decided to give all the new Trails part 2 space to the elephants/guest amenities instead of new hoofstock space.

@ tschandler71, what kind of zebra ??? a hartmaans mountain, Damara, Chapmans, Grants, or Grevys

and animals come fist in my book, so elephant space i could understand, but guest ammenities, REALLY ???

in my opinion hoofstock should fill the space, like maybe get a blackbuck, armenian mouflon, takin or something because i really miss diverse hoofstock collections

my fondest memories at the san diego zoo were in horn and hoof mesa, i remember on my last trip to the san diego zoo, eating a veggie burger at sabertooth grill and litteraly crying and telling my mom that we were sitting in the old giraffe paddock

like i said, we need to some how do something about this, phasing out of hoofstock isnt right, i dont care if the general public dosnt find them interesting, a zoo is supposed to show the guests what animals are interesting not indulge there moans and cries and ignorant opinions !

Well see if you go to the website you will the the elephant layout that opened this year. Phase 2 was supposed to be opening in the spring and would feature expanded yards for the hoofstock etc. I went today and the Kudu (my favorite) are gone. The keeper said they went to another zoo and there are no plans to add another species. This a zoo that a decade ago had gemsbok nyala grants gazelle tommy gazelle kudu sitatunga and topi. Now I know they lost most of that when they lost AZA accredidation back in 2000 (they have it now) but I guess it is an AZA thing as far as space goes.

Biggest crowd I have ever seen at the zoo and it was new years eve (it helps that it was beautiful today). Anyway, the lone thompson was in the Kudu pen and there ARE NO PLANS TO REPLACE. Serious folks, do zoos get pecking order on animals. It seems like every time we get something cool it goes to a bigger zoo.

The Zebra are common Grant's Zebra.

The new All bull herd is great and helps with attendence but that the expense of other species?

were they lesser kudu or greater kudu ?
and btw i would really love to see those other ungualtes come back !!!

It was a male and female kudu with a 1 year old female baby. ISIS says that the male is still at Birmingham though just not on exhibit. I wish there was a "hotsheet" for the zoo industry so I would know where animals leave/go.

I still haven't figured out which Zoo that Ricko the black rhino went to.

The Phoenix Zoo used to have a great sitatunga exhibit with a stream flowing through it. Now it has chacoan peccary I think?

Reid Park Zoo used to have greater kudu and nyala together. Then for a while we just had the nyala. They were shipped to San Diego Safari Park when we moved the rhino into their yard.

As for San Diego Horn and Hoof Mesa, I always thought it would make more sense for them to focus their antelope collection at the Safari Park and smaller animals at the zoo. Of course, the variety of hoofstock at the Safari Park has gone way down too, so it is really a bummer for people like Ungulate Nerd. I was at the Safari Park two days ago and they do not even have zebras in the field anymore. It is just nothing like what it used to be.
