Greensboro Science Center Greensboro Science Center: News & Expansion Updates

Now @OkapiFan, regarding the wolves move to their new home in Florida, do you happen to know about the exact zoo that the science center has plans to move them to. If so, I think that it will be quite interesting to see on how both of them will fare in their new home, post-quarantine of course.
I unfortunately do not.

Well, in that case. I do suppose that we can always wait and see for what both institutions have to say in their social media accounts, once the two of them do eventually arrive at their new home.

Lots of AMAZING updates this week!!

Otter Chisana has moved up to the aquarium and is behind the scenes.

Hippo introductions have gone well and they are together much of the time now. There has also been a lot of breeding going on.

Black-footed Cat Huck will now have access to his indoor exhibit. He is a little shy so it may take some time for him to be out all day.

Trumpeter Hornbill’s Ronnie and Jazz are now together. Their introduction went great and they are already living harmoniously together.

The male binturong will arrive Monday.

Also the center put out a video on their Facebook page saying that th he Red Pandas have officially discovered the other side of their exhibit.

A bunch of updates this week

- Winter Wonderlights' set-up is wrapping up.

- Shark Reef Dives are on hold due to an animal welfare concern with Shark Lex who may be losing her eyesight.

- The penguins have gotten territorial during nesting seasons. Dives will be cancelled for this exhibit until the penguins are comfortable with people on exhibit again. The exhibit will be skimmed from the beach by the aquarists for the time being.

- Chisana and Theo (small-clawed Asian otters) had introductions this week and all went well. We are now starting to acclimate Chisana to the exhibit and are giving her and Theo access to front of house and back of house when it is their turn to go on exhibit.

- Our new male binturong Mee-noi is here from a facility in Utah and doing well in quarantine. His name means “little bear” in the Thai language

- Our Servals, Tut and Kira, are going to be alternating exhibit time during the day.

- Bakari the Okapis exhibit expansion fencing is done. Now we are working on a few modifications and leveling some of the ground.

- Dug the white peacock is temporarily off exhibit

- Two of our wolves have made it safely to their new facility in Florida.

- The red pandas have made their way over to the other side of the exhibit and are enjoying decimating the bamboo there too.

- Holly and Ralph's introductions are continuing to go great.

What are Holly and Ralph?

I just gotta say that this years Winter Wonderlights is phenomenal!! I highly recommend it. I was there last night for the staff/volunteer preview. Some notes from last night.

- A lot more animals were out than I thought (Gibbons, Kookaburra, Cassowaries, Farm Animals, Binturong, Serval and Red Pandas had access to their outdoor exhibits but were inside, Small cats and Red Pandas indoor viewings are lit up).

- Huck the Black-footed cat was very active.

- Susan the Binturong made an appearance (though brief)

- Again the whole thing was AMAZING and I highly recommend checking it out when it opens!!! It feels like a different experience than last year and is just soo good, I know I'm repeating myself but it's just that amazing!!

One of the most recent projects at the center is the renovation of the entrance plaza. This was built in the 1950's and is very outdated. They did some work over the summer, and it looked good, but there was still a lot of outdated walls. So, the center has been painting them and adding other cool science things to the plaza. I do't have any pictures of these, but will get some next time I go. However.... the center posted a picture of the work so far on the latest mural to their Twitter page I HIGHLY recommend going over there to check it out, IT LOOKS AMAZING!!!

The center just announced the hatching of another African Penguin chick!! The parents are Guinn and Vello, and the chick is being cared for by Tux and Kaaspe. I believe this is the twenty-second chick that the center has had on the eight year that they've had penguins!!

The all the birds outside will be off exhibit for the time being because of the avian flu in the state. The cassowaries will be able to put every once in a while to stretch their legs. Penguin encounters having been cancelled as well for the same reason
