Greensboro Science Center Greensboro Science Center: News & Expansion Updates

  • African Penguin chick Niffer's gender has been revealed! It's a girl!!
  • White peacock Dug was put down this week as his quality of life was not doing good after his foot injury.
  • The two remaining Maned Wolves will move out on the 25th (there is no word on when the new pair will arrive)
  • There is some new paneling and graphics on the conservation side of the new hospital and conservation lab building.

  • The new Madagascar Hissing Cockroach colony will be on exhibit soon.
  • Penguin Niffler will be on exhibit during the day.
  • Tiger Raza was introduced to the exhibit last week. Her introductions to the exhibit will hopefully continue this week. If positive signs continue, the area will likely be open for the public next week but view windows may still be fully or partially blocked. She will not be introduced to Rocky any time soon.
  • The remaining two Maned Wolves have gone to Wheeling W.V. and a new pair will arrive on March 10.

Also there are some more updates

  • The center has two new Maned Wolves Iggy (1.0) and Fiona (0.1)
  • Gwen the Prehensile Tailed Porcupine has moved (temporarily) to Ruby the Macaws old exhibit in the zoo
  • Javan Gibbon Duke (1.0) is now off exhibit permanently. He is recovering from a minor injury, and is getting ready to go to a zoo in Asia (I believe)

The zoo has just unveiled two future expansions. One is a rainforest biodome and the other is an aquatic rehabilitation center. Pictures can be seen on there Facebook but here is the press release.

The biodome will feature “sloth, toucans, clouded leopards, caiman, capybaras, giant tortoises, birds of Amazonia, and creatures of the understory, showcasing diverse and colorful reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.”

Meanwhile the aquatic rehab building will “The ARCC will build on that success by providing students, families, guests, and universities with a conservation and research “Ocean Lab” designed to propagate and/or replenish wild coral, sea horses, jellies and other aquatic animals in need. The facility will also serve to rehabilitate sea turtles and isolate, treat, house or quarantine sharks, rays, and other fishes.”

Centerpiece Projects of Gateway Master Plan Revealed

Once this is done, I could see the GSC becoming more popular than the NC Zoo!! I am at a loss of words to explain how excited I am!

Also the center has two new lapwings that will go on exhibit with the kookaburras

GSC is very good for what it is (a museum with animal exhibits out back). NC, even without new work in decades, is a massive facility with a great many ABC species. After the Asia and Australia expansions this will be even more true. The rainforest dome is a very exciting project that can bring the museum to the next level, but I am very skeptical it will ever be a serious rival to North Carolina.

I'd say *just as*. North Carolina has the BIG ticket animals, while Greensboro fills in the gaps that North Carolina has in its collection (e.g. penguins, tigers, gibbons, okapi, cassowary, small cats other than sand cats, etc.)

Unpopular opinion, but I actually prefer the Durham Science Center. The species list is small, but it is a bit of walk to get back to the popular animals (ring-tailed lemurs, red wolves, etc.). For someone like me who can't stand crowds, GSC is a bit too compact and the animals are too easy to access. In Durham, there are times when you get the whole exhibit to yourself for 15 or 20 minutes. I guess it all depends on what a person is interested in. GSC is definitely on the up, and locally I hear everyday co-workers and friends speaking more favorably about it than the NC Zoo.

I’m very excited for this obviously. It’ll take a few years even if the bond is approved but shows initiative for the zoo and more birds is always a plus. NC Zoo will always have the bigger species one expects at a zoo but with this the center will only improve.

I wonder where this expansion will actually be. I guess this stuff could replace the discovery house and have sufficient room but we will see.

It’s also my favorite of the two museums. I like the large exhibits and peaceful vibes. Good scenery, too.
