Greenville Zoo Greenville Zoo News

Left the zoo about an hour ago. The Harris’s hawk enclosure was gutted and roped off, with the construction zone extending to the center of the South America area. Any idea what might be going on there, or if the zoo still has its hawk? They do have those two ambassador sloths from a few months back, so I wonder if they might be looking to put them on exhibit? That's pure speculation on my part, but I'm not sure why they would’ve bothered reworking this exhibit out of all of them if they didn't have a good reason.

The giraffe feeding platform appears to be finished and Miles has been investigating it and has had a couple of feedings from Zoo staff. I think the planned date for public open is still June 1, 2023 as that is a Saturday, which is typically the Zoo's busiest visitor days. Also there was work done this last week which appeared to be wiring for what is hoped to be a live cam when it opens to the public. The baby will be two months old in about a week and still does not have a name, but coinciding that with the feeding deck opening seems plausible :)

Maybe les grew up with a feeding deck. He is a bottle baby so he loves people. He will probably hog the feeding deck.

Miles did grow up with a feeding deck so he is very used to it and the other day he threw a little fit when Zoo people were on the deck but not feeding him :)

Feeding deck had some people visiting it yesterday that did not look like Zoo workers, getting closer to opening to the public. Also there has been a guy doing some wiring on the deck (he was back again today 5/23/23 at around 11:15 paddock cam time), I am hoping for a live feeding deck camera :)

The deck is not finished.

Also the baby giraffe is over 4 months old and she’s still un-named.

They had rain and stuff during some of the construction of the feeding deck, that could have caused delays.
I thought for SURE the baby giraffe would have a name in time for World Giraffe Day. It just seems weird to me that they have not named her.

I hope a feeding deck camera does not result in them taking down the barn cam!

Myself and another daily watcher of their cams and running a group for Autumn have asked the zoo directly and here are their responses to date:

There is no camera planned for the feeding deck
The deck will not open until late summer or early fall no reason given
The baby will get a name "soon" and that is all they will say as it has been asked by multiple people but no dates or time frame or reason why not named already
Autumn is on birth control currently that allows her to cycle still every two weeks hence Miles being on her like glue when that happens and even has made at least one connection I witnessed but no pregnancy will occur on the birth control no timeline for how long she will be on it.

That is everything from the zoo itself. Autumn was on birth control last time for about 9 months after Providence's birth and then got pregnant almost immediately after coming off it with the new baby. Given her age, I would say they will not wait longer than that and maybe even shorter as she is now 17. I do not know why they have not named the baby and they haven't provided any answers to that question. No idea why the deck is delayed it appears finished but who knows really.

Left the zoo a bit ago. No sign of the black swan and its signage has been removed. It may not be the most exciting species, but I’ve always really loved the mixed lagoon they have going on and the contrast it provided to the flamingos and screamers. Hope they’re able to replace it.

The zoo had out “baby on board” signs for both the red pandas and bat-eared foxes, but I didn’t get to see either. I spoke with a docent briefly about the red pandas, he said they were born a few months ago but since this was the mother’s first litter they didn’t want to officially announce it too soon… but she’s started carrying them around through the exhibit so they couldn’t hide it any longer. He said there were two or three babies and they seem to be doing well. This was before I saw the sign for the foxes so I don’t know any specifics on them. Given that these signs were out this week but not last week I’d assume social media announcements should be coming shortly.
