Guess the species? #5

Your logic is all good. Here's a hint. These photos were all taken in the last two days in southwestern Idaho.

well number three looks like a thrasher, so I'll try sage thrasher even though it doesn't look streaky enough (perhaps one with worn plumage?). I guess that could be a sage bush to the left.....

#1 -- I missed the yellow throat (I thought it was the leaves), so is it a yellow-throated warbler?

Yes! You have correctly identified the plant. The bird however, is no thrasher.

well that's got to be worth double points then!!

Is thrasher close (taxonomically speaking...say a mockingbird) or not even so?

Blackburnian warbler for number one? You've got some really nice birds in North America!!

...honestly I have yet to see a photo that does a Lewis's Woodpecker justice. They are brilliant in real life!
there's a nice one on Opus: Lewis's Woodpecker - BirdForum Opus

I don't know if that photo does it justice, but I reckon that's a bird that would cause me to go to America. Are they difficult to find?

Still not quite there. The first one IS a wood-warbler, you just haven't found the right species. The third one is not Mimidae.

Lewis's Woodpeckers are intermittently encountered if you are in the right place in the right season. They're tough to track down based on sightings though as they seem to be pretty wide-ranging. To be honest, that one was my first, but I have only begun earnestly birding this year.

Since I'm away from home and don't have access to my zoo photos, let's do something a wee bit different. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Ha ha. Chlidonias as ever I am impressed by the sheer size of your bird-brain

okay so I've got two more ideas for the warbler, the first of which is yellow-breasted chat. If that's wrong I'll try the other one and if that's wrong then I'll have to go back to the drawing board.

then I'll try northern parula (*crosses fingers*)

Number three I just don't know unless its a species of kingbird?

Sorry, no. John James Audubon would be ashamed.

You're on the right track for number three, it's a flycatcher.

aaargh, you Americans and your wood warblers!! You should be like New Zealand and only have a few birds, none of which are confusing!!

Ding ding ding! It's a Say's Phoebe.

And by the way, my insult about number one, was a clue in disguise. :D
I thought it might have been a hint, and I my immediate idea was "oh, Audubon's warbler" because I was sure I'd heard of such a bird. Unfortunately the warbler list I was checking through calls it a yellow-rumped warbler and I didn't get that in comparing the photos of that on Google Images with your photo.

Nevertheless, I'll say Audubon's warbler for number one :D
