Guess the species #6

On reflection I think Chli has the connection right, but perhaps not the species:

1) pig-nosed turtle
2) dog-faced baboon
3) round-eared elephant shrew
4) sable antelope
5) cattle egret
6) butterfly goodied

1. Pig-nosed Turtle (Carettochelys insculpta)
2. Chacma (Dog-faced) Baboon (Papio ursinus)
3. Round-eared Elephant Shrew (Macroscelides proboscideus)
4. Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger)
5. ?
6. Butterfly Goodied (Ameca splendens)

Connection: Names of other animals in their names.
And the connection of the photo titles is: they are all amino acids :p

1) Pig-nosed turtle
2) Crab-eating macaque
3) Round-eared elephant shrew
4) Sable antelope
5) Cattle egret
6) Butterfly goodied

For the connection I'm jumping on the name bandwagon.

I am quite impressed, but no-one is perfect yet. One species has still not been identified.
Chlidonias is our star tern so far (:o sorry, I couldn't resist it) and he gets a notional bonus point for getting the connection right. No bonus is available for spotting the amino acids and I ought to metaphorically tick off everyone who spells 'goodeid' incorrectly.

3.round-eared elephant-shrew
4.Sable Antelope
5.Dalmatian Pelican
6.Butterfly Goodeid

1. Pig-nosed Turtle (Carettochelys insculpta)
2. Southern Pig-tailed Macaque (Macaca nemestrina)
3. Round-eared Elephant Shrew (Macroscelides proboscideus)
4. Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger)
5. American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos)
6. Butterfly Goodied (Ameca splendens)

EDIT: American White Pelican doesn't really fit in I've realised (with some pointing out :p), but I can't think of what to put for that one which fits.

that was my fault. Devilfish spelled it correctly, and I typed it too fast without noticing my typo, and then I think everyone just followed on from my post without realising I'd done that.

I think it is number two which I had wrong, so I'm stealing Swampy's guess above for that one.

1) pig-nosed turtle
2) ursine colobus
3) round-eared elephant shrew
4) sable antelope
5) rhinoceros hornbill
6) butterfly goodeid

Unless ZTL is lacking information - always possible - I think ursine colobus is unlikely, as the last UK holding was in c. 1912

These games are so unpredictable! The name that hasn't appeared yet is one that I was worried about because it seemed so easy

I love Swampy's Dalmatian pelican, it isn't correct, but I wish I had thought of it :) it would have been an extra twisty twist! If I ever get to do this again I will have to consider Griffon vultures, Siamese crocodiles and Abyssinian lovebirds too. But I don't think I could get away with Jack Russell's vipers :D

Ok, here we go:
1. Pig nosed turtle
2. Dog faced baboon (Chacma baboon)
3. Round eared elephant shrew
4. Sable antelope
5 western cattle egret
6. Butterfly goodeid
Connection: names of other animals in names
Also, they're all animals. :p

Dog faced baboon is not in the UK.

I'll give it a try too :
1 Pig-nosed turtle
2 Raccoon dog
3 Round eared elephant shrew
4 Sable antilope
5 Rhinoceros hornbill
6 Butterfly goodeid
The connection was already mentioned - animal name in the animal name.

The story so far . . .

. . . . we have 6 animals whose names include the name of another animal. I think everyone is now in agreement about about numbers 1, 3, 4 and 6: so numbers 2 and 5 remain. One of them has a few correct answers but more that are wrong, the other has still not been answered correctly. One of these two species is no longer in any UK collection, but it has been within the past 5 years, which is today's extra clue.

2. Nose-striped owl-faced monkey (Cercopithecus hamlyni)
3. Round-eared Elephant Shrew (Macroscelides proboscideus)
4. Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger)
5. Rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros)
6. Butterfly Goodeid (Ameca splendens)

2 seems obvious to me... :D Has Owl in it, and was in Twycross until 2011 (within the last 5 years)

Connection, for the sake of mentioning it, is animals with other animals in their names.:D

I am now kicking myself for not extending my search for animal-related old world monkeys to guenons  :o

i think Vision has it.

I knew there was a guenon which was missing. I just saw Hamlyn's monkey and kept on searching.

Well done Vision! You answers are completely correct, although the last owl-faced monkey from Twycross joined the ones at Edinburgh for a short time before they were moved on. I don't know why everyone else missed that characteristic white stripe ;)

So the 6 photos give 13 animal names - pig, fly, turtle (good value from 1 photo), owl, monkey, elephant, shrew, sable, antelope, rhinoceros, hornbill, butterfly and goodeid (or alternatively splitfin - a reference to the shape of the male's anal fin which acts as a pseudopenis during mating).
Photos taken at Regent's Park, Twycross, Regent's Park (the Clore, many years ago), Chester, Chester and my front room :)

My thanks to everyone who had a go, I hope it was fun for you.
