Gutted!

See, I find greys just as beautiful as the reds, unfortunately I think it's a shame that they can't co-exist. I know all the reasons why they can't but I still find them equally as stunning.
Just that reds are a lot rarer and I feel they should be cherished more.

Its interesting that they do seem able to co-exist- for a while- but invariably the Reds start to disappear a few years after the Greys arrive. It doesn't seem the Greys are actully aggressive, but somehow(you know the reasons obviously) they tip the balance. Epickoala says he/she gets both species so must live in one of the 'border zones' where both species occur.

Last year I saw a very healthy-looking Red Squirrel deep in the New Forest, it was miles from any housing etc. In fifty years of observations I have never seen one there before- have a few survived alongside the Greys, or was it some isolated incident?

The legendary no show in Belgium is the kiwi in Antwerp Zoo. It is in a normal aviary, so it's always a sleep during opening hours. It is so elusive I even had keepers saying that suposedly they have a kiwi in the aviary but they're actually not sure as they never saw it themselves.

With the kiwi I had more luck. During a working-visit - a long time ago - I went in the enclosure with a keeper and the kiwi was in his hidding-box. Because the keeper knew I would love to see a kiwi he simply opened the box, grabbed the bird and gave it to me !!!! :)

Nice (I m very jealous now). You also might be the only person except for the keeper that has seen it :). I know other keepers who have not seen it ones in all the years they work there.

...red squirrels pretty much anywhere...

I've got to admit that this year has been the year of red squirrel sightings for me, seen them at Dudley on both visits (hoping to make it 3 in a row next week! :p) and on pretty much every visit to Birmingham Nature Centre since January.
And I've now had some cracking views of the Geoffroy's cat! :p

Sorry to quote my own post and sorry for bumping my own thread.:o

Wish I'd gotten to see the moose at Whipsnade, I don't think I've ever seen them before.

Also a bit miffed we somehow never saw the elephants on their walk, or get a close look at Emmett/Tundi. We did get to see them got to see them come back to the paddock and meet up with the rest of the herd, which made up for it though.

A recent trip to the SDZoo led to the discovery that they have a pangolin presentation!!! Unfortunately said discover happened 15 minutes after the presentation ended...

Some tales of woe here! Some that spring to mind - Water Shrew at Slimbridge; Philippine Tarsier at Bristol; Marbled Cat at Howletts and African Golden Cat at Port Lympne (and I wish that we'd start calling Profelis aurata "Golden Cat" and Pardofelis temmincki "Temminck's Cat", given that consensus is now that they're not very closely related!)

The majority of Montpellier zoo :( , causing the missing of Caracal, Sichuan takin, Siberian lynx, Barbary lion, as life ticks go.

Spotted Eagle Ray and Panther Grouper at Discovery Cove. Both species were taken off-show for medical exams during my visit. Also, Black, Common, and Blue Duikers, Lesser and Greater Kudu, and the elephant calf at Lowry Park.
