Tierpark Hagenbeck Hamburg Zoo

On the 4th of September female Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) Toba passed away. She was born in Zoo Frankfurt in 1984 and arrived at Tierpark Hagenbeck in 1989. During the 32 years that she lived in Hamburg, she gave birth four times. 2 females; Janina (1994) and Sly (1999); 2 Males: Kejutan (2004) and Batu (2020).

At the end of March a female Black crake (Zapornia flavirostra) arrived from Zoo Leipzig to accompany the already present male.

On the 2nd of May a female bactrian camel was born.

On the 13th of June a Green-winged macaw (Ara chloropterus) hatched.

At the end of June the third Plains buffalo (Bison bison bison) of this year was born.

At the beginning of June 3 Common rock hyraxes (Procavia capensis) were born.

In July the Eurasian harvest mice (Micromys minutus) moved to the former rat enclosure.

In July a pair of Red-crested turaco (Tauraco erythrolophus) arrived from Allwetterzoo Münster, they can be found in the Tropenhalle in the Tropen-Aquarium.

At the start of July the last (male) Rothschild's giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) was send to Safaripark Beekse Bergen.

This year 3 Onagers (Equus hemionus onager) were born.

At the end of July 6 Subantarctic gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua papua) had hatched!

In August a Mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) was born, I believe that Hagenbeck now has 8,8,6 mandrills!

In June 2 Red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis) hatched.

In October 3 Asian small-clawed otters (Aonyx cinerea) were born.

Tierpark Hagenbeck is the only zoo in Europe that has succeeded in breeding Folohy Golden frogs (Mantella laevigata).

Recently a 1-year old male Chapman's zebra (Equus quagga chapmani) arrived from NaturZoo Rheine where he was born, he will become the new breeding male.

Quick question about the red-billed oxpeckers. According to ZTL, Hamburg has two of these. ZTL also says they're kept in both the Bird House and the Tropen-Aquarium. Does that mean both these locations have one individual, or is this information outdated?
 
Does anyone know if the birdhouse is open now? (it was closed for a while because of covid).
And eismeer?
 
According to the website, the penguin enclosure and sea bird enclosure remain closed for now...
It says nothing about the bird house, so I assume it's open.

I'm visiting this zoo for the first time next week and it seems Hamburg is the only German city / zoo to keep some covid restrictions in place. Kinda sucks, the sea bird aviary seems one of the highlights, but it seems I'll have to miss out on that.

I visited yesterday and I sadly have to say that the birdhouse was closed as well. Barely any birds around at all anywhere in the main park (not counting tropenhalle) because of the bird flu.

Their big duckpond was empty, the ibis/waterfowl aviary was empty, the birds in the kangaroo house is kept behind the scenes, all cranes and storks are kept behind the scenes - and the penguin "freezer", the sea bird aviary, and the birdhouse are completely closed off (two of the outdoor aviaries on the birdhouse is in use, they house sun conures and taveta golden-weaver, the rest of the birds is kept inside the locked birdhouse.

The only way to see the seabirds right now is from the underwater window in the "eismeer rundgang". We sat there for a while to eventually see them dive down, and after a while, some zookeeper threw fish into the water so most of them were diving down to us (we saw the razorbill, common murre, Atlantic puffin, king eider, and harlequin ducks). And even though the birdhouse is locked you can still poorly see some birds through the windows in the door (I saw the African three-banded plover and the Hildebrandt's starling).

The tropenhalle was normal though, but we had to sanitize our shoes before entering to reduce the risk of bringing in bird flu.

Well they should've made that more clear on the website then! That's a lot of animals that are not available, but the website only mentions the sea birds and penguins. They also neglected to tell me this when I asked about it by email.

I have just booked and payed my train ticket to Hamburg so I can't cancel anymore so I guess I'll just visit and get an half experience. Looking forward to it a lot less now though.

I know the bird flu is not their fault, but honest communication would have been appreciated

Yeah, I agree. It was pretty disappointing when I realized that the door to the birdhouse was locked.

So the birds that are on show right now are the following:
* Flamingos (1 group indoors and 1 group outdoors)
* Great white pelican (indoors)
* Boat-billed heron (indoors)
* Scarlet ibis (indoors)
* Roseate spoonbill (indoors)
* Humboldt penguins (outdoors)
* Red-and-green macaw (outdoors & indoors)
* Peafowl (Outside, free-ranging)
* Mandarin ducks (on the Birma-Teich, free-ranging)
* Sun conure (Outdoors)
* Taveta golden weaver (Outdoors)
 
Just visited the zoo. Things have changed for the better. Cranes and storks are back on show. Ibisses/spoonbills/stilts were in their outside enclosure, so were the great white pelicans and both groups of flamingos. All ducks on the big pond are still offshow though, as well as the silver teals, comb ducks and ringed teals.

The bird house was OPEN, to my great delight and surprise. Although small, I saw 3 new species in there.

In the Eismeer, both the sea bird aviary and the Antarctic pinguïn enclosure were OPEN despite what the website still says. This made me really happy and I loved both these enclosures!

Needless to say, this made my visit today a lot better than expected.

I was shocked by the lion enclosure though. Did not expect it to be THAT BAD!!!

Very sad news from Tierpark Hagenbeck, 4-year old male South-East Asian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) Raj passed away. While he did test negative for EEHV, so an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
