Hamerton Zoo Park Hamerton News 2023

I don’t know how up to date it is but you can check ZooTierListe and sort out the carnivores from the other animals.

Way easier is to use the "expert search" with Hamerton as zoo and select Carnivores (mammals, not domestics) as the order. For an often visited zoo like Hamerton it will give a good indication, especially if you click the holding to see the latest source.

Fun visit to Hamerton today, quiet visitor wise, cold and windy.

The bears are starting to go in for torpor with noticeson the path to the enclosure. The path isn't blocked off yet - perhaps it won't be closed this year given the dingos are due to move to the area and the new platform is up. Two of the bears (Laika and one of the males) were visible playing in the rear enclosure next to the house, but the gates to the main enclosure were shut.

The path to the brown hyena enclosure is blocked off again at both sides, another introduction etc might be going on or could be part of the prep for the moves. Blocked near the bat eared and corsac foxes and on the the other side half way past the servals - no sightings possible of the brown hyenas for now.

The new brown hyena space on the other side of the bears looks to be coming on nicely along with the new tree planting and there's a good looking new pond on that side too. Good views from the bear platform.

Elsewhere, construction continues on the new enclosure feature opposite the tigers.

Lots of plant and tree tidying going on around the zoo. The young brush turkeys have gone outside to the enclosure formerly occupied by the lemurs next to the other brush turkeys and pudu. As well as two young barking owls next to the burrowing owls, one other is visible but not signed behind the kookaburra. The young white cheeked turaco is still in the nursery but looking lovely. And the young crane has really shot up and is nearly as tall as the parents, great to see that. Got really good views this time of the anthill python who were active in their terrarium which was nice as they have been curled up inside their log when I've watched them before.

25 species of carnivore then. Can't be much between them and Exmoor as the largest holder of carnivores in the UK anymore?

A little out of date re Exmoor. They no longer house, Coati, Asian Small Clawed Otter or Striped Skunk. Jaguarundi are off show as well, but I think are still there.

Dingoes are of course at both collections now as well.

Exmoor 2/3 years ago had as many as 35 species of carnivores, so whilst ones numbers has dropped, Hamerton's has increased, with only 5 species between them now, it'll be interesting to see how it compares in a couple more years.

I make it 28 Exmoor, 23 Hamerton.
