More New Guinea short-beaked echidna in the UK isn’t a bad thing - one hopes they have more success with this animal than the aardwolf though...

The aardwolf died due to ingestion of a twig which came off an overhanging tree which perforated his intestine. It was purely 'bad luck'. The PM showed he was in perfect condition. Unfortunately these things happen.

Glad to hear he was at least in good condition before he died. Best of luck with the echidna, hopefully you can find it a companion.

Hemsley Conservation Centre have released an article reviewing 2020 and looking forward to 2021. All the major news from this year has already been mentioned on this thread (birth of rusty-spotted cat, return of maned wolves, arrival of short-beaked echidna) as well as news that two of the prehensile-tailed porcupines have now been introduced with hopes of them breeding in the near future.

Should everything go to plan, in 2021 a couple of new species that arrived in 2020 but have not yet been announced will be revealed and several new enclosures will be opening, including a lemur walkthrough, a tree top enclosure for the tayra and new areas including an enclosure for the echidnas.

They'd had some really great announcements so far so I can't wait to see what other species they've got.

The Hemsley Conservation Centre have now announced the birth of a Prehensile-tailed Porcupine:

"The HCC is proud to announce the first prehensile tailed porcupine to be born at the centre, and the first to be born in the UK for over 10 years. Born to a first time mum, she is taking motherhood in her stride and we could not wish for better parents. Born on 19th March, the baby porcupine or porcupette to use the correct term, is gaining weight each day and now weighs over half a kilo. Rest assured, you'll be getting plenty of updates over the next few weeks!"

We are hoping to receive tapirs between Easter and the beginning of the summer holidays, and later in the year they will be joined by spider monkeys - sharing an exhibit. Tapir species will currently be Brazilian but we are working with a coalition of 5 other European zoos on bringing in new blood for Baird's tapirs to form the nucleus of new breeding animals. As with any imports, this is likely to take some time (potentially a few years) and involve a lot of pen pushing.

From memory, those weren't "rumours" per se :p they were outright lies from a certain infamous former member fond of reviewing zoos!
See above^^

Would be wild if Hemsley of all places got them
Agreed.

I have just came back from Hemsley and saw that there are now 2 tayras and the lowland tapir is in a quite dull enclosure if I'm being totally honest but overall I did really enjoy this zoo and by recent developments I cant wait for what the future brings for Hemsley.
