Looking at the zoo map, it is startling at just how much of the facility has been built in the past dozen years and all of the progress has boosted the annual attendance to 1.2 million. From 1980-2005 the zoo was fairly stagnant and then the largest project in a quarter-century made its debut. Elephant Encounter (2005) paved the way for the brilliant Asian Highlands (2006), the money-making Conservation Carousel (2008), Rocky Shores (2012), kiddie splash area Lighthouse Point (2013), African Savanna (2014) and Creekside children's play area (2016). What's up next? The gorilla/orangutan yards are adequate but could possibly be modernized, and the Small Animal Building has a lot of species but is also a bit outdated.
