Houston Zoo Houston Zoo News 2019

The zoo has a new map that shows the location of Texas Wetlands (opening shortly) and South America's Pantanal (opening in 2020):

Zoo Map, The Houston Zoo

After those two major additions, Houston Zoo has 'Ancient Relatives Phase 1' (opening in 2021) and then 'Galapagos Islands, North Entry, and Reflections' (opening in 2022) as the zoo is spending $150 million and developing almost 50% of its acreage to all be done in time for the zoo's 100th anniversary in 2022. A total of $5 million will be donated to conservation programs.

Launching into 2022 With a New Zoo, The Houston Zoo

Houston Zoo has come a long way in the past decade with numerous new exhibits, and the next few years will be an exciting time as yet more new animal habitats are unveiled. Already the zoo has well over 850 species and very few American establishments can top that. Perhaps only the John G. Shedd Aquarium (1,500), Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo (1,300) and San Antonio Zoo (1,000) are ahead in that category (unless I've forgotten a facility), plus Houston's attendance numbers have been robust for years. The North Entry will be much needed by the time 2022 rolls around!

Houston Zoo Centennial Campaign

Went bouncing through the future plans website with the new exhibit open. I see 3 things I didn't recognize before:
1) Orangutan redesign has a date of 2020.
2) Front Entrance and new Restaurant has slipped to 2024.
3) Galapagos exhibit now lists Penguins in species list. Other creatures were there before.
4) The overall section map now lists the Children's Zoo as "John P. McGovern Children's Zoo: Texas!" The "Texas!" is new.

I wish there was a way to incorporate the maned wolves into the South American exhibit, but it looks like Houston has already sent their stock elsewhere. They had been a staple of the zoo since the 90s.
Kudu, Eland, Warthogs, Cassowary and other African hooved animals appear gone for the time being, though I expect they will be back to take over the exhibits the south american creatures leave behind next year. Look forward to seeing what will temporarily replace the current Jaguar exhibit and some areas of children's zoo as Texas wetlands becomes repetitive of some parts.

It appears the Cypress Circle Cafe received a significant layout change? I seem to remember several smaller food counters around it’s circumference.

Cafe has been open since December (maybe November). It's now one large Dine-In location (inside tables) instead of 3 separate small inside counters of differing foods with only outside seats. Food is the same as what Twigga Cafe offers with a similar but more spread out and more environmentally friendly layout (think Apple store : white).
