Houston Zoo Houston Zoo News 2025

Not just that but also Squirrel Monkeys and Maned Wolves too. :(
In general houston zoo has downsized the number of species to make way for larger modern habitats since Lee Ehmke was the director as many other AZA zoos have done over the years. For example, when I went to houston zoo frequently as a kid, they had tons of antelope species in rows of ugly smaller exhibits that look like house backyards. Now they have bongo and 2 duiker breeds. The ankoles could act as wild african antelopes there as cattle and antelope are biologically related and they're located by the zebras and wild dogs.

Is there a picture?
I checked out the interactive map this morning and saw nothing. Now I see the changes on here.

Reflection pool closed off until summer 2025
Select “current projects” and see Colonnade Construction. Building the Future, The Houston Zoo

Also according to the map, the children’s zoo has the Wildlife Workshop opening April 22, 2025. Replacing the Swap Shop.

That's amazing that Thailand is having a happy life in Houston and he is the top 3 eldest elephants in the USA in 2025. I hope he breaks the US record of America's oldest Elephant!
As far as I know he's currently the oldest captive male elephant - and certainly holds the longevity record for males of his species outside of Asia.

It is quite incredible that he has been able to achieve such a admirable age - whilst still being a very active father to all of his sons, and still breeding the cows! A huge testament to his keepers.

No, Vance at White Oak Conservation Center is currently alive at 62 years old. Also, there is a bull Asian Elephant named Anura at Tama Zoo in Japan who is still alive at age 72.
