How has COVID-19 affected you personally?

The governor of California made a statement saying he finds it unlikely few, if any, California schools will reopen before summer break. (Most California schools likely out until the fall, governor says) I really hope this doesn't turn out to be true, I'll go crazy being stuck inside that long. Plus, since this is my senior year, I'd much rather give some of my friends proper goodbyes since I may well never see them again.
I find that going on a walk every day helps. While it probably isn't the best for my health, as we've been instructed to quarantine ourselves for a reason, I find that it helps me keep my sanity. Some fresh air and sunlight can do wonders, even if it's just for a bit. If walking isn't an option, then just sit outside on a porch or even by an open window.

I've got a pretty big livestock guardian dog - which means I have to go out for his regular exercise, but his presence keeps people at bay anyway. ^^

One way to keep people at bay, I walked up to local shop yesterday and it was busy....Been waiting to do my normaly weekly shop but that was probably a mistake.

I also refusing to buy toilet paper incase it looks like I am panic buying although I would normally be buying some now.

One of my school districts is closing until April 14. Once again had to learn from the news, god forbid they keep the subs informed of what's going on. So I expect the other district to make a similar decision soon. Guess I'm applying for a grocery job! When's that free money bill gonna come through?

April 14, if they really come back then that's a lot of missed school. I wonder what point there's just too much of a sunk cost and it's not worth opening up the school. Like, by that point, kids have missed over a month of school. It's going to be a struggle to get them back in the routine, they have to go over a lot of stuff, and their behavior isn't going to be very good not only because of this big disruption, but because school is going to be over in a month anyway.

It's rumored a lot of school districts may not return until next fall. It'll be really hard to get the kids back on schedule after so long out of school. The biggest problem is probably going to be the learning gap, especially for kids that need additional help in learning.

For real. A lot of schools are trying to provide online learning, but a lot of kids don't have internet access at home, and as you say, many need extra help. And even for the ones that have internet and don't need extra help, well, a lot of kids barely do their work in schools as it is. Good luck getting them to do it at home! It's gonna be sink or swim for these kids.

If this happened while I was still in school my dad would probably make study Spanish for four hours a day. Guess I should be doing that right now, lol.

To save on toilet paper, i'm using the rolls to wipe myself after peeing while reserving the paper itself for the number two.

And if water ever becomes an issue, just remember, if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down.

Aaaaand the grocery store that was doing short term hiring has taken down those listings because they got so many applicants! Guess I'll try Wal-Mart and Target, though Target has the most hellish application process. (they have those stupid questionnaires that take like, an hour to complete)

You could look into grocery delivery with something like Shipt.

Yeah I'm looking at some of the apps, I applied for Fleet and I'm waiting on my package. I'll look into Shipt. Hope this works out, apparently people are scrambling for these types of jobs too.

I know people are making a lot of money with Shipt. Apparently you get paid regardless of whether the store was out of the items requested right now. People are basically being paid to tell people that yes, the store is still out of hand sanitizer.

Take care of yourself Ambika,I hope nobody in Zoochat contracts COVID-19.

I have been diagnosed with the flu, a sinus infection, an ocular infection, and a potassium deficiency! Never has one been so happy to receive such diagnosis of mismatched maladies! I still had NYC exposure yesterday that could be a factor next week, but for now, I do not have COVID-19!!!!!

Excellent that you do not have COVID-19, but very sorry that you have all the rest of that! I hope you feel better soon!

That's actually one of the arguments FOR re-starting school if it's safe. A governor's declaration of state of emergency gives him the authority to make changes to requirements for promotion to the next grade, for graduation, etc. Say, if 180 days are normally required, a state of emergency can enable this figure to be changed legally. So while, picking up after a month off may seem like a learning gap, it's significantly less than the learning gap they'll face after six months, and the cost of having to repeat an entire year for students nationwide would be staggering. Much better to complete a year flawed by a pandemic than let students go 6 months with no schooling, facing a bigger learning gap, and then incurring costs of an entire year's repeat.

I'm encountering two problems as I prepare to go online tomorrow. First, not all students have wifi, access to computers, OR the assigned time for class, since many may have either children or siblings home from the public school who need to be cared for. For that reason, I've decided not to hold synchronous classes with Collaborate to simulate real classes. Students are no longer likely to be available at the specific appointed class time, so I'm using discussion groups that students can commemt on at their convenience, homework projects, and in a few weeks, some videotaped 5" chats from me to insert some visual and audible instruction into what is otherwise very isolated and reading-heavy. Developing some sense of class community is a high priority, at least as high as skills-learning itself. But addressing the needs of the entire "Accessabilitly" population without personal face-to-face and help from accommodations is going to be a major limitation of what we can hope to do.

For jobs, I'd advise forgetting any large department or big-box stores. Home Depot is rigidly monitoring the 50=person max capacity rule, and lines form outside, with one new customer entering for each one who exits. They are working hard not to exceed the 50-person limit of customers + employees, and with many fewer customers, they will need fewer employees. Right now all restaurants here are only open for takeout, and I can see the huge stores closing in the same way.

As people isolate, however, just the opposite will be true. Deliverers will be the key to everything. Before this, I've never ordered anything but a pizza, but for the next two months, with my high risks, I'll be ordering groceries, prescription drugs, whatever I need. Between stores' own delivery and services like UberEats, demand for this particular service--along with the health-care sector--is one that's guaranteed to increase.

Absurd news that was reported in the Korean, and international press about two weeks ago: In Japan, the trade in granite has been brisked due to rumors that granite stone releases radon, a radioactive substance, to help prevent COVID-19.

But now, I think this rumors seem to have subsided, given the fact that they are not bought and not bidding for granite anymore in Japanese shopping sites, such as Yahoo Auction and Mercari. But as I said before, beware of false rumors.
