Always a fun exercise, thanks for the thread!

I managed to visit 21 zoos in 2022, 13 of which for the first time (in bold) across 4 different countries. I added over 30 mammal lifers from these visits- a feat that's getting harder and harder. I also brought my zoo total to 291, only 9 away from finally breaking 300!

1. The Bat Jungle, Costa Rica
2. Queens Zoo, USA
3. Trailside Museums & Zoo, USA
4. Pennsylvania Bat Rescue, USA
5. Lehigh Valley Zoo, USA
6. Batu Secret Zoo, Indonesia

That’s an impressive list! What was the Weizmann Institute of Science like? I hadn’t heard of it before and it is difficult to find details about their animal collection online.

Average year in terms of zoos I've visited, but I've finally visited my first non-Hungarian collection in 11 years!
Budapest Zoo (10+ times)
Sóstó Zoo Nyíregyháza
Debrecen Zoo
Monster Fish Private Zoo, Budapest
Körösvölgyi Állatpark, Szarvas

I only visited 6 zoos this year- too few for my liking, but as I don’t live near any major cities with zoos, visiting one is a special treat that doesn’t happen often.

First-time visits are highlighted in bold.

1. North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores
2. National Aquarium In Baltimore
3. North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher
4. San Diego Zoo
5. San Diego Zoo Safari Park
6. Maui Ocean Center

This year, I plan to visit the two North Carolina Aquariums near me again at some point, as well as Sylvan Heights Bird Park. Also, my trip to Singapore is on the horizon, but the date is not confirmed.

Which mammals brought you here?

(Impressive stats and collections visited, it should go without saying :D)

Thanks for the kind words @ChunkyMunky pengopus !

Jenkinson's was for a potential Brown-mantled tamarin, (Leontocebus fuscicollis), which we determined later was instead Andean saddle-back tamarin (Leontocebus leucogenys) which I had already seen.

Oakland was just to visit a new zoo. While I historically would only go to zoos that held new mammals for me, lately I've been visiting zoos just for the sake of the visit.

Thank you @ZooElephantsMan! I went here to photograph Middle East blind mole-rat. They also kept fruit bats (which I didn't see) and house mice.

  • London Zoo (good)

Two places for the first time:

International Crane Foundation

Minnesota Zoo (was there for a meeting and only went through the aquarium, Tropical House and the native animal areas near the entry.

Visited Melbourne Zoo but that was for a program launch and only saw one New Holland Mouse.
I tell a lie. I actually visited three new zoos in 2022. The third was Shaldon Zoo in Devon in the United Kingdom. This is almost certainly the smallest accredited zoo in the world and is only one acre (0.2ha) in area.

Amazingly, you're incorrect - both Cedar's Nature Centre (c. 920 m²) and the vivarium within Manchester Museum are a) significantly smaller and b) hold full zoo licences. Unfortunately, the latter has been closed for some time whilst the Museum is renovated - although it is due to reopen in a month or two. It contains a significant number of unusual amphibian species, some unknown to science before being described at the museum.

Shaldon is also excellent, of course - and punches well above its weight.
