how to fix the problems of empty zoos

The clouded leopard at Melbourne zoo can often be seen. Her keeper calls her a giant house cat. I've seen her twice now on my trips to Melbourne (Ilive in Brisbane and visit Mel about once a year). Beautiful animal.

fishing cats vs golden cats

i've only seen her a couple of times, but she is a beautiful cat.

on a similar note, our region is only planning on having one asian small felid species and it seems that out of fishing cats and golden cats - in the long-term future we may have just one. both species have a very similar status in australaisn zoos...

which one would you pick?

fishing cats can be hard to see, I'm not sure about golden cats, but why only one. Surely it is feasible for a zoo to hold both species? They aren't large animals, their exhibits are usually not very large and it would be possible for each zoo to have multiple pairs. They don't face the same quarantine issues as the ungulates so more can be brought in for new blood. If the hoof species are goinf to disapear ( and I beleive that it is only a matter of time before both giraffe and zebra go, both are way too inbred) we need something. We could be a world class area for Specialising in the feline and canis species.

But as is usual for ANYTHING in Australia, it sounds like we are going to be mediocre in what ever the zoos do.

zebra shouldn't be inbred! being a odd-toed ungulate they can be imported. infact i think a stallion was brought in from OS just recently...

i dunno, i was supprised about the small cats too jay. fishing cats fit in well to an asian-themed open-range type setting as well as rainforest, so they have the potential to be dsiplayed at every zo in the region...
