Huge Elephant Exhibits in European Zoos

Size does not always count, as quality will always trump quantity.:) However...

I've used the opening line from the thread "Huge Elephant Exhibits in U.S. Zoos", where I created a master list (with the help of others) of 24 American zoos with a total of 25 elephant exhibits that were 3 acres in size or larger. The 25 enclosures include those that are the finished article, some that are currently under construction, and a few that have yet to be built but the funding has been guaranteed. All will be in place by 2015, and the way things are going in the U.S. zoo industry there might be a couple more to add as time comes by.

Now I'm asking for help from the ZooChat community in the entire continent of Europe. How many elephant exhibits are 3 acres in size or larger? Does anyone wish to compile a list? Anything less than 3 acres can be skipped, as the bar has been set at that minimum size on the other thread.

Here is the original thread:

The Cabarceno zoo in Spain has a 74 acre enclosure. I dont really think that can be beaten in europe or the USA!!!! The have 3.11 african elephants.

Whipsnade = 7 acres (source: Asian festivities for Whipsnade baby elephant)

Boras Zoo = approx. 6 acres (thanks to Dan)

Just a small adjustment to CZJimmy´s kind reference to my postings on this subject: Borås Zoo: actually 7 acres if you include the two adjoning bull enclosures (and Borås only has one bull so, presumably, he has constant access to the full one acre - as he should have, since that is minimum requirement according to Swedish law...).

Emmen Zoo = 8.15 acres
Zoo Cologne = 25.75 acres (outside) + 6.8 acres (inside)
Ouwehands' Zoo = 12.92 acres
Safari Beekse Bergen = 29.65 acres
Amersfoort Zoo = 8.15 acres (present one)
Rotterdam Zoo = 8.46 acres

There is absolutely no way the Rotterdam exhibit is 8 acres, and the Cologne figures seems suspect as well.

I read Colognes was 5 acres, and I (surprisingly ;)) agree with redukari, Rotterdam is no way bigger than Whipsnade's exhibit even though I've only seem pictures.
Howletts is 8 acres, and WMSP is 6 acres.

I'm very shure that Rotterdams Elephant Exhibit is less than 8.46 acres. Maybe the total of Taman Indah has that size.
Also, Emmen (the present exhibit!) seem to me smaller than 3 acres (= about 1.15 ha)

Zurich will built a new elephant exhibit for about 2012. Plans and a model of the future enclosure/building are already published. I don't remember the size exactly but I have in my mind that it should top the 3 acres.

The total is up to about 10 now...but surely there are more than that?

I question whether Valencia is that big--I believe the entire zoo is only 35 acres or so. They do a nice job of hiding barriers to create the illusion of great space, but my guess is the elephant area is well below 3 acres.

Does anyone know that size of the Port Lympne exhibit they must have a few acres at least?

Sorry I miscalculated, so here are the figures in metric:

Emmen Zoo:
Outside; 1.0 600 m2 (now open for all elephants)
Outside; 0.1 + offspring 2,700 m2
Inside; 1.0 2 boxes of 50 m2 each (not in use today)
Inside; 0.1 + offspring 600 m2

Zoo Cologne:
Outside; 1.0 3,400 m2
Outside; 0.1 + offspring 4,650 + 2,370 m2
Inside; 1.0 2 boxes of 125 m2 + 500 m2
Inside; 0.1 + offspring 1,600 + 9 boxes together 400 m2

Ouwehands' Zoo:
Outside; 1.0 1,200 m2
Outside; 0.1 + offspring 3,670 m2
Inside; 1.0 2 boxes of 80 m2 each
Inside; 0.1 + offspring 6 boxes of 24 m2 each + 72 m2

Safari Beekse Bergen:
Outside; 1.0 3,000 m2
Outside; 0.1 + offspring 9,000 m2
Inside; 1.0 2 boxes of 40 m2 each + 65 m2
Inside; 0.1 + offspring 5 boxes of 36 m2 each

Amersfoort Zoo:
Outside; 1.0 1,300 m2
Outside; 0.1 + offspring 2,000 m2
Inside; 1.0 2 boxes of 45 + 65 m2
Inside; 0.1 + offspring 5 boxes of 36 m2 each

Rotterdam Zoo:
Outside; 1.0 400 + 300 m2
Outside; 0.1 + offspring 2,800 m2
Inside; 1.0 2 boxes of 30 m2 each
Inside; 0.1 + offspring 500 m2

The data came from the European Elephant Group and from the zoos itself.
