Huge Elephant Exhibits in U.S. Zoos

Does anyone happen to know what elephants at DAK are pregnant?

I happened to find this old thread. Does anyone have an updated list of big elephant exhibits in the U.S.?

Also, have any of the planned elephant exhibits on the list (e.g., Omaha, Columbus African elephant) moved into the realm of reality?

Fresno will probably go on this list as they are designing their exhibit, have funding, and a projected opening date of 2014.

There will be 19 out of the 25 exhibits open to the public by next summer, and of the 6 that are remaining Oregon Zoo already has the funding for its 6-acre elephant complex. Fresno will be a worthy addition to the list as that zoo badly needs a new elephant habitat.

re: Reid Park Zoo at 3 acres.

I keep hearing conflicting numbers. The one number that is consistent is that the entire expansion, including visitor area and elephant barn, is 7 acres. At first I heard half actual elephant habitat (3.5 acres) and half visitor area. Then for a while the number 3 acres for elephants was being thrown around (as reported at the start of this thread). A couple weeks ago I was on a tour and a zoo staff person said 4.5 acres for the elephants.

I think the 3 or 3.5 number is not including the elephant barn, which I assume takes up about one acre. So if you include that it could easily be 4.5. This makes more sense than half area for elephants and half for visitors, because if you look at the model (link attached) it sure looks like the elephant area is bigger than the visitor area.

the rosamond gifford zoo in syracuse, new york has a recently renovated asian elephant exhibit. I heard it's at least 4 or so acres in size, but it's just a guess
