Hunter Valley Zoo Hunter Valley Zoo News

Jeebus people... I never implied that Berani would be euthanaised to free up space... who's been reading between the lines here?

I'm willing to tip that it is indeed Berani who is going to Hunter Valley... how many other candidates are there in the area? duhhh!

You sort of alluded to it when you said
Taronga are redesigning the area that Berani is currently housed in, so he would either have to move anyways, or be euthanaised, so why not find him his final home at Hunter Valley?
which I thought meant that he either be moved or euthanised so that the new tiger exhibit could be constructed.

On your second point, initially I thought it could be possibly the Adelaide mother and daughter (Mia and Jelita) that could be sent to Hunter Valley (or even Jelita just by herself), or that Hunter Valley Zoo might look into the possibility of importing new animals. I understand that they are not really 'in the area' though.

So I have to spell it all out in great detail when I make statements like that, huh?

If Berani was too frail or ill to be moved, then euthanaisia could be on the cards, yes? Or would you prefer to have him live out the last of his days with construction going on all around him and stressing him until he passes away "naturally"?

Of course that an animal that is in severe pain and suffering should be euthanised in correct protocol as an ethical obligation of being a zoological insitution. I do not agree with the idea that an old or frail animal should be euthanised simply for logistical reasons. If he is currently healthy (which I do not know) then the correct thing to do IMO is to send him to Hunter Valley Zoo to live out his days as a result of the situation that the zoo is in (having to construct new exhibits over the top of older exhibits).

I think that this discussion should probably be better off carried out via PM rather than hijacking this news thread. :)

When it turns out the sentence is ambiguous, then it helps to clarify what you actually meant. At least, that's what I do. I find it preferable to getting defensive.

For the record, I read your statement the same way Jabiru96 did.

From facebook

Hunter Valley is now home to four squirrel monkey's and three capybara.

Taronga has given them Berani the Tapir, Bruiser, Kuchani, and Asali the Lions, 3 Spider Monkeys, and 3 Fennec Foxes.

They have 3 Maned Wolves - 2 younger females and one older male - no plans to breed at this time apparently.

Hunter Valley is a zoo to watch for expansion over the coming years...

Hunter Valley zoo have received a male and female sibling pair of white lions from Queensland, presumably Darling Downs

There is a video on their Facebook page

Is the Malayan Tapir still alive at Hunter Valley? Has anyone been there recently (as in the last couple of months)?

The zoo has announced today they now have a trio of Black and white ruffed Lemurs!

As well as the three new Ruffed Lemurs noted above from their Facebook, Hunter Valley also got Ring-tailed Lemurs earlier in the year which hadn't been mentioned. On the previous page of this thread (in July) it was said that they had received two Ruffed Lemurs, which may have been a mistaken reference to the Ring-tailed Lemurs perhaps? I'm not sure.

LEMURS NEWEST RESIDENTS OF HUNTER VALLEY ZOO - NBN News (from May 2017)

and in answer to my own question, there's a post about the Tapir from this month on their Facebook.

I believe the zoo has imported Cheetah from the UK!
if you could put links that would be much more useful for everybody.

Cheetah brothers call Hunter home

Cheetahs Aibu and Jabari are the two new residents at Hunter Valley Zoo in Pokolbin. They made their debut on Friday after being imported from a zoo in Europe.

The brothers were two of four siblings to make the journey to Australia in a partnership between the Hunter zoo and the Darling Down zoo in Queensland.

So it looks like these two males are from the 3.1 imported by DDZ in May this year from Hamerton in the UK. One female went (or will be going) to TWPZ in exchange for an unrelated female, and these two males went to Hunter Valley. So there should be one male from the import still at DDZ.
