In search of rare cat species

Thank you Dave , much appreciated. The cat kept by Chester doesn't appear to have lived too long but it might have been adult or elderly when it arrived.

I believe that it actually left the collection for Kilverstone - who were responsible for the initial import - rather than dying :)

Interesting , do you know if it was a wild caught individual ?

It was one of three individuals - all male - which came from Santiago Zoo; I don't know if they were born there or were wild-caught, however. The species was still held at Kilverstone in 1992, the year it closed, but I don't know if they were present *when* it closed, how many were alive at this point in time if they were, or where any survivors went.

The last Pampas Cat in Europe died in 1996, at a collection in Italy.

Do you know when these would have been kept at London and Chester in terms of dates ?
I assume this would have been in the early or perhaps mid 20th century ?
Chester was 1979-1982 :) and London was in the interwar years, I believe.
London Zoo acquired its first pampas cat more than a hundred and fifty years ago, back in 1868; two more were obtained in 1871.

As TLD has pointed out, there were pampas cats at London Zoo during "the interwar years”. It should be noted that pampas cats bred in London Zoo during this period; in 1930 two young were successfully raised.

Very interesting to hear about the historic breeding success of this species and just how long these cats have been kept in British zoological collections, I had no idea that they had been kept in these for so long.
