Indianapolis Zoo Indianapolis Zoo news 2025

1.0 California sea lion "Owen" was transferred from the Brookfield Zoo to the Indianapolis Zoo on June 24th, 2025.

Owen was initially rescued as a pup in 2015 and released after a month of rehabilitation, but was recaptured and deemed nonreleaseable eight days later. Owen was housed at the North Carolina Zoo for nearly six years before his transfer to Brookfield in 2021.

According to Cetabase, a bottlenpse dolphin calf was born at the zoo this month.

That's exciting news. I wonder whether this calf was born to 0.1 Calypso (2015), who is the perfect age to be a first time mother.

Aside from her, Indianapolis have two other females who both last calved in 2012 (both producing un-surviving calves: Nova (1983) and Indy (2001).

Hopeful for a healthy calf!

I have not seen an "official" announcement from the zoo yet, just an announcement on Facebook that their dolphin presentations would not happen for a few days, but no reason why.

The zoo has welcomed a female Sandbar shark named Blue.

This is a great positive change. I remember feeling slightly underwhelmed by the opening Oceans room (in a building I otherwise liked) and one of the biggest suggestions in my almost finished review was to say that a large shark or a sea turtle would punch the room up a bit, provided they had space.

Would it be possible to have more sandbar sharks on site?
