Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens Jacksonville Zoo News

So according to the zoos website the $50 million campaign will focus on four species: manatee, elephant, lion, and orangutan. From the schematic they show it also seems like Indian rhino and gibbon may be housed in the new orangutan complex as well.
I think they were planned for Monsoon Asia over more than a decade ago, but then it got turned i to Land of the TIger and perhaps those plans were scrapped. Since they have White Oak nearby they could make a South Asian exhibit with Indian Rhinos, Sloth Bears and Barasinghas along with birds such as pheasants and perhaps rarer large AZA bird species like Lesser Adjutants and or Painted Storks.

I have heard that the zoo plans on using the old lion habitat as an elephant expansion area. Perhaps this will become a bull yard for Ali and it would be great for Jacksonville to get new young breeding age cows. If I remember correctly, Sheena is post-reproductive and Thandi is scared of Ali. They could send the cows away and replace them with two new young cows to breed with him.

Do you have a link to where it says this on the website?

I apologize that I have no news to offer, but I will be visiting and plan on filming the entire zoo in late January. I figured it was the best time to go, but now I'm concerned some animals may not be outside, am I being paranoid?

They can welcome African elephants Vasha and her daughter Kianga from Disney or Christie and Zuri from Hogle

That would be great! Jax needs breeding age cows so Ali can contribute naturally, other than just AI. They could then send Thandi to another facility like Milwaukee which only has postreproductive cows and all cows and Ali could share space when Ali isn't in musth.

According to their Instagram account. The zoo has announced that their 11-year old male Malayan tiger “Jaya”, will soon be transferred to his new home at the Little Rock Zoo as part of a recommendation from the SSP. However, guests will be given one last chance to see him at the zoo on January 31st, just before he begins to move out of the state.

Was at the zoo today. Duval County's spring break week was last week, but so many people showed up today! Also, it seemed every exhibit I went to some sort of aspect of the "birds & the bees" going on. Brisby the Cassowary was trying to mate with a log, AJ the giraffe was interested in the females and I saw Greater Flamingos 98 & 19 making the next generation. Mosi the Grevy's Zebra was the worst. If it was a movie it would've been clearly rated NC-17! He was separated from Makena who was in her holding pen, but that didn't deter Mosi from showing his intentions. At least the Greater Flamingos had some courtesy to face the other direction!
Other than that the weather was really nice and the animals were active overall. I also found out that the zoo has a grove of Henon (Giant Grey) Bamboo right inside the front entrance which is my favorite bamboo after the Alphonse Karr.
Also Mickey the Bongo's horns are coming in nicely. The Yellow-Backed duikers were in their holding pen today. Also in the Lorikeet aviary, it looks like there's an Abyssinian Roller! A pair of Hadada Ibises have moved into the old Rock Hyrax exhibit in Elephant Plaza. I've really been liking Hadada's recently. Their colors are amazing!
The Yellow-Billed Storks are building nests in both the River Valley Aviary and the old Amur Leopard exhibit. I did not see Slim the Marabou Stork on exhibit with Jack the Red-Necked Ostrich, Archie, Gabby, Kipenzi the White Rhinos, Greater Kudus, and the Grey Crowned Cranes. I hope he's ok and didn't pass away. The Wood Storks have begun building nests. There were at least 15 I saw on the main tree in the African Loop. Other species I saw building nests around the zoo were Great Egrets and Black-Crowned Night Herons.

Just as I speculated in the Zoo Knoxville news thread all those months ago; my predictions for where “Bashir” would go to did turn out to be true. For the (Jacksonville) zoo recently announced that the 13-year-old male Malayan tiger had indeed made the move from Knoxville; and has since been adjusting well into his new home in Florida, after arriving there back in early April.
