Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust Jersey Zoo Update 2011

I understand the Rodrigues Fruit Bats are now mixed with the Livingstone's Fruit Bats in the rebuilt Bat Tunnel. What's happened with the original Rodrigues Fruit Bat house opposite the manor?

Hve the aye-ayes in Jersey bred in the last years? It would be depressing if the the pair in Frankfurt would be the only breeding pair in Europe at the moment.

The pair of aye-aye at Bristol are breeding but it seems the female cannot rear her young , the only two survivors have been hand-reared .

Thanks, Jerseygorilla. Do you know what the future plans are for the Komodo Dragons and Galapagos Tortoises? At the moment these are quite young, and the Komodo Dragons can continue to live in the reptile house, the Galapagos Tortoises in the outdoor tortoise paddocks. But what is going to happen when these animals reach adult size, as their existing accommodation won't be big enough for them, surely.

we did ask the same questions recently... because of the indoor space restrictions, the komodos will very soon move to one of the bigger exhibits and will be raised (and trained) there for the next 2-4 years, depending on growth. Then they'll be moved to other zoos under the EEP and new juveniles will move in to be raised and trained and so on. Good idea I think because most zoos want adults only.
The galapagos will gradually have increased their space (possibly by moving out the marginatas). Over the years the outdoor area will apparently be re-structured anyway.

Thanks for that. I am a little disappointed that Jersey is not to breed Komodos themselves. I must admit that when I first heard they had acquired Komodo Dragons, I rather hoped they were planning eventually to build a big exhibit for them similar to London's, Chester's or Colchester's.

some additional news from Jersey. A female hamerkop is in quarantaine currently to join the male in the aviary in Kirindy forest.

I've just read (on Wikipedia no less) that most of the ambitious 46 million pound redevelopment plan at Durrell, announced in January 2008, has been cancelled due to costs. Is this true? I do hope not.

3 x meerkat babies and 2 x yellow mongoose babies are now active and can be seen following their respective parents outside!
Ya Kwanza due to move in the next few months
2 x pairs of twin ring tailed lemurs in Kirindy
1 x new narrow striped mongoose male
New covered area being built outside gorillas

Given their recent financial woes I would imagine it has been scaled back or put back for now-46 million is a huge amount for any zoo let alone a tiny one on a tiny island.

Hi. I'm new to this group and have been reading posts for the last couple of hours....little bit addicted already I think. I have no Zoo experience...has always been a dream of mine that ended up pushed aside by kids. But I am sooo soo passionate about animals so can't wait to learn from you all.

Just wanted to check something about Ya Kwanza going. Will he be put into isolation prior to his move and for how many days? I would like to pop up the road and see him at least once more before he goes. I must admit to being a HUGE Jambo fan and haven't really given Ya Kwanza much of my time...and am now feeling a little guilty about it. Hope someone can give me an idea of whether I have enough time to pop up on the bus before he goes.

Thanks. Love and Light, Carina xx

Welcome to Zoochat.

I would contact the zoo for that information. They may take him offshow for periods if they are training him to enter/use a crate for the move, but I'm sure they can answer your question.

Jambo was an extremely charismatic animal-and a hard act to follow, while Ya Kwanza has also been a disappointment in the breeding stakes, only ever breeding with Hallali and not the others. I've never been sure whether the fault lay with him or the females.

Hopefully things will improve when the new male 'Badongo' arrives- presumbly by the return trip, as he's coming from where YK is going to- Romagne in France, so he should arrive soon after.

You may find some fun and interesting insights on the Keepers Twitter page :D

There a youtube video(April) of one of the pairs of Choughs being moved into an offshow Aviary.

Did either or both pairs breed successfully this season- if so, how many chicks reared?

Ya'Kwanza had a hard act to follow to be fair,he never "had it" with the females in the group really, and he's not a " pretty gorilla" by any stretch.

There will be probably never be another "Jambo" at Jersey again,he and N'Pongo & Nandi and the offspring in the early 80's are the reason i got into gorillas in the first place.

Hope Badongo proves me wrong :)

I'm going to Jersey zoo in August, just wanted to ask, is there any parts of the zoo that are easy to miss, I don't want to miss the best parts of the collection out, any hints and tips? Thanks!
