OK, so Dallas Zoo a bachelor group and Kansas City 2 new breeding females. Seems like a good win-win situation on all sides (I am somewhat familiar with the unfortunate gorilla saga at Dallas ...)!

I don't think they were sent to Kansas City for breeding purposes, as they live with an elderly male who won't breed.

What is the point in presenting a family group of gorilla when the silverback is an inept breeder?

Anyhow: any new projects on line at K.C. Zoo?
Notable pregnancies, births and hatchings?

All I can think of is the new black rhinoceros calf that is not yet on exhibit. A rumor suggests the NA river otter is pregnant, but it is probably just rumor.

An interesting article, posted below, covers these topics:

- almost record attendance in 2011 thanks to the new polar bear exhibit
- new Sumatran tiger exhibit in 2012
- new penguin exhibit, costing $15 million, in late 2013
- other future exhibits include "Predator Canyon" for big cats, a children's water playground, and new habitats for gorillas and orangutans.

The future seems bright for this zoo with all these new and exhibits coming up. However, it seems like they may not have that grand of plans for the new tiger and orangutan exhibits. I may be wrong, though.

There are pictures of the new tiger exhibit at the zoo and it looks great! It will feature a waterfall and replica ruins as well as a viewing area in the middle of the exhibit. Manis and Langka will be much happier than in that cage they are in now:( Those poor tiger brothers.

Every time I walk by the images of the tiger and orangutan exhibits I feel they are just rediculous. They would need a huge section of Southeast Asia imported directly to Kansas City to make those exhibits look like that. I hope they will do a good job, but recent exhibits don't make me overly hopeful.

I'm not really displeased with the exhibits; more the approach of adding a few super common animals in boring cookie-cutter exhibits. Not bad, just nothing outstanding like Africa.

2 gorilla's at the kansas city zoo today got out and into the feeding area today at the zoo which caused a code red to be issued.

My parents just got back from Kansas City Zoo and they mentioned that the chimpanzee exhibit was devoid of chimps and that baboons had been introduced into the enclosure. What happened? The only thing I knew about was a chimpanzee that had died unexpectedly last year and an autopsy was to be performed.

Never mind, the parents missed the chimpanzee exhibit and thought that the baboon exhibit WAS the chimpanzee exhibit. Everything seems to be fine and well there and hopefully the zoo tax will only increase the habitats.
I went to the zoo on Earth Day and listened to Mattias Klum, who does photography for National Geographic, talk about sustainable growth. The small Joel Sartore Rare photography exhibit is a nice and thought provoking display. I would suggest looking at the zoo website for events since there didn't seem to be alot of advertising in the zoo itself for these events and guests.
