Has anyone else seen the photos of the renovated Sumatran tiger enclosure? Judging from the photos on the Zoo's Facebook page, though it is an improvement over the current situation, what's been done isn't what I had expected. Hopefully this was a temporary fix until Predator Canyon can be opened.:(

That's not saying much. The new exhibit, unless they aggressively start planting trees, is to be a small, grassy slope with very little shade and landscaping that doesn't look like anything that would naturally occur in the rainforests of Sumatra. I will admit though, the pool fed by a waterfall looks very good and I hope the young brothers enjoy their new pool

Unless it is quite small I'm amazed that a major American zoo managed to construct a Sumatran tiger exhibit for only half a million dollars. Usually those type of large endeavours cost much more to build.

Well it's 5 times the size of the old one, which we both know was very small.

I'm not sure I'd call this a large endeavor either since it's just one animal exhibit that doesn't seem to have many thrills and doesn't need to be part of any theme or need any buildings built or any major work at all from what it sounds like other than the pool and waterfall.

Also, as always, people should keep in mind the difference in construction costs at a place such as KC compared to places like SoCal, Chicago, NYC, etc.

Did the zoo build this exhibit on the former tiger exhibit? If so, they may have been able to utilize resources from the already existing tiger exhibit, which could have made some things less expensive.

From the pictures in the article it looks like it took up some unused land as well as the enclosures holding demoiselle cranes and binturongs. I am probably going to go see it in the next couple of weeks so I can confirm this. I don't think it's a permanent fix; just a way to get people off their back and to give the two brothers some natural enriching features until they have the funds to build a multi-million dollar "Predator Canyon" exhibit

Well that's one less zoo to guess where the female polar bear from buffalo zoo will go to stay. I'm starting to think she may go to one of the nyc zoos if the males are still recommended to breed.
Back to this zoo, m glad to see new polar bear breeding matches and hope for the best .

Gus at Central Park is very old and probably can't breed. I'm not sure about Tundra at Bronx, but his exhibit is awful. Perhaps when Gus dies, the female from Buffalo will go there? But this just speculation, so I'll shut my mouth now.

Our 2013 Association of Zoos and Aquariums promo video. This is a satire and of humorous intent. We think this is pretty funny.
