Does anyone know if the tigers are pure Amur. And If so do they plan to bring in a Male ?

Need to get a male fairly soon then if they are planning on breeding. Shame if they don't as they have an excellent exhibit
 
Is the old Amur Tiger enclosure still being occupied to split the lion pride up (possibly the males that are more subordinate)?

If not, what is the plan for that area?
 
The old tiger enclosure is currently occupied by the second pride of lions (2 males and 4 females) who currently live there and the two enclosures before it. All of these three are linked by tunnels and are in effect just one big enclosure.

I believe that these three enclosures in their current form will remain to the lions. I find it unlikely that they will give the lions less space to put another species in there. Having spoken to the keepers the lions seem to appreciate all the space given and they say that it is useful when keeping the two males together so I hope it will stay the same for them.

  • Can confirm that the lions will continue to have access to all three enclosures
  • the enclosures opposite the lions look empty so I'm assuming the vicuna and capybara have moved if anyone can confirm this
  • there a were three waterbuck in with the baboons
  • female tiger Sinda was in season and was very active in the second smaller enclosure
  • Blackbuck heard is no huge must be about 40 animals
As someone who often visits knowsley I always seem to wonder if they have any plans for the old hunting dog enclosure. I have always thought it would be a great cheetah enclosure
 
Sad news from Knowsley,

7yr old male lion Mojo has died after being treated for injuries sustained by fighting with the females in the pride. He died while recovering from the anasethitc and the post mortem revealed "injuries not visible on external examination".

I went here a couple of years ago and the Big Cat reserves were closed all day due to 'the Lions fighting'.

I revisited here yesterday, mainly to see the Asian deer and antelope which are my chief interest there.

Some numbers of these(quoted from staff);
Chital- 71
Blackbuck- 34 (inc 4 young born recently)- there are currently 3 'black' bucks in the herd + around 8 younger/'brown' males.
Brown-antlered Deer- 19.
Nilgai- (circa) 10
Swamp deer. 1.0

Elsewhere in the park; the Kiang are now 12 and prevented from any more breeding. Still nothing(?) appeared to be in the old wolf enclosure opposite the Lion enclosures. White Rhinos out on open safari again, with Eland, Zebra, Ostrich, Gnu and Waterbuck, but Lechwe were confined. Missed the giraffe and new wolf enclosures as no time to walk around that area. Will post a few photos in the gallery.

P.S. the pot-holes are quite bad...;)

Good to know they have decent numbers of Blackbuck -- not nearly enough about these days IMHO.

One of the main reasons for my visit.(see my photos in the gallery) Afaik this is the ONLY UK collection with a natural/breeding herd. Howletts now have only females, Port Lymne only castrated males; West Midlands- big herd (50+) but only one castrated male now; both Whipsnade and Longleat- no male; Hoo Farm- ex Chester stock- one pair plus one young.

Any additional updates/information welcome.
 
1:2 Ostrich have arrived from Wildlands Adventure zoo in Emmen to join 0:2 already there. Hopefully another breeding program for Knowsley in the future
