I would imagine that we'll be hearing of all the Grey Seals departures very shortly, since their exhibit occupies part of the future Reptile/Amphibian/Insect exhibit's future site. Now as to why they chose a large portion of the Aquatics section(for I understand that the Sea Lions will probably remain)totally baffles me. Originally it was to be located next to the Rainforest of the America's exhibit. Even the large field behind South America, right in front of the World of Birds seemed a more likely spot.

Actually, the remaining seals have already been moved with the sea lions. I doubt they will try to move them, especially since they are really old and I think blind.
 
Just a quick question:
I know USAmericans usually spell "grey", "gray". In the context of grey seals you're spelling it Grey. Is that how you usually spell it? Thanks

According to the July issue of Zoo Scape, it was the youngest member of the group. If it was the only remaining male, that's probably due to the fact that the others are(and according to mstickmanp have already been moved)joining the Sea Lions in their pool. Now wasn't that the original plan for these two species in the new Sea Lion(now Sea Life)Cliffs?:confused:
 
I was under the impression that the plan was California sea lions and harbor seals together in Sea Lion Cliffs.
 
I don't think that a male grey seal is coming into Brookfield Zoo and I volunteer at Brookfield. First, we have a harem group with Boone and the 2 girls Tasha and Lily. But maybe LA zoo is bringing him in to be with our harbor seals

No, the original plan was actually sea lions and gray seals. The harbor seals were brought in after the sea lions did not work in the new exhibit, and then were moved back to their old one.
 
More news from my visit this past saturday:

I saw two baby Babirusas with their mother in the smaller side exhibit. I also saw three new Fennec Foxes in the former Burrowing Owl and Desert Tortoise exhibit in the Children's Zoo. Also, the two North American River Otters have moved to one of the roundhouses formerly used by the marsh birds by the Speke's Gazelle exhibit. The old river otter exhibit is now home to the two American Alligators, who moved because construction on the new Reptile House is about to start. I also saw a baby Japanese Serow running around it's exhibit. Also, the new African Wild Dog is now on exhibit with the zoo's male.
 
Thats it? With a collection like Los Angeles, I would have expected a higher number this far into the year. Especially with the bird hatching season soon coming to a close.

Well, that is only from April till now. I've heard of more animals being born, but they were from before April.
 
I was at the zoo today and got to see the new Giant Otter on exhibit. She is actually in the former Maned Wolf exhibit instead of the Baird's Tapir exhibit. I also found out that the Maned Wolf will eventually move to the tapir exhibit and the tapir will be moved off exhibit.

The pool in the exhibit where the giant otter is now is not that big, but she enjoys the dirt a lot. She kept running through the whole exhibit smelling the trees, trying to climb the trees, and kept rolling in the dirt. I actually didn't see her even get near the water while I was there. I also found out that a male otter has been located, but I don't know from where.

Then I guess the barrier I saw around the Baird's Tapir exhibit on Tuesday, was to keep the Maned Wolf from leaping out. It is a much lower wall. They really need to enlarge the pool for Otters though, they are such aquatic creatures, and would make viewing them much more enjoyable even though their current space is only temporary.

I agree, although I heard that the pool inside the former maned wolf exhibit is actually a little bit bigger and deeper than the old tapir exhibit. The old tapir pool looks bigger since it's closer to the people, but it is actually very shallow compared to the old maned wolf pool.
 
As for a male otter, Im guessing it will most likely be Rojo from Philadelphia Zoo
