The news I have been wanting to hear for some time now.

Any indication when the new pronghorn will come in and how they will be distributed between the participating zoos?

Not certain, but it would be my guess that the new pronghorns could have already arrived, and are behind the scenes in quarantine. Since we have excellent facilities for that at our health center. And the fact that the minutes for these meetings are somewhat behind.

I was looking through flickr and I saw that 4 Crested Screamers hatched last month. I also saw pics of a Black-necked Swan that hatched on June 17. The photo also shows at least two more eggs in the nest, so hopefully they also hatch soon.

I just came back from the Volunteer Appreciation party at the LA Zoo and we were given an update and some new details on the new LAIR exhibit. I don't know how much I'm allowed to reveal here, but all I got to say is that it might be better than many think it will be. Some things that were new to me are that most of the exhibits will be floor to ceiling exhibits and that many of the exhibits will also be mixed species exhibits. The Southwestern building will also have some surprises, but I don't think I could reveal them just yet...

Thanks Mario. I was pretty much aware of the floor-to-ceiling and mixed species displays; those have always been in their plans. But don't get yourself in hot water by revealing any "top secrets" to us just yet. I'm sure those will be officially released shortly.

LA Zoo News 2

The old thread was started in 2009 and is now 12 pages long. So, as I have done for a couple other zoos, I am taking the initiative to start a new thread. Let us agree to discontinue using the other thread and post Los Angeles Zoo news here.

The zoo commission meeting minutes for June 21 have been posted. Here is the link: http://lazoo.org/about/commission/minutes/June2011Minutes.pdf

Highlights include:

-Some species for the new LAIR (reptile house) were mentioned. Although I'm confused why they mentioned the Komodo Dragon clutch of eggs (21 eggs in total), because as far as I know they won't be exhibited there, which were expected to begin to hatch this month!
-Work on Rainforest of the Americas is anticipated to begin in August 2011.
-Reparations of the Gorilla waterfall began on June 27 and the contractor has 40 calendar days to complete it.
-LAIR was 68% on June 21 and so far on schedule.
-Over 169,000 people visited the zoo in May.

Mario, I'm glad you once again have taken the reins on posting the zoo commissioners report. I felt like I was infringing on your territory the last few months.

Went to the zoo yesterday as a visitor for the first time in almost 4 years! First of all, the map answers some questions that we've had about opening dates for both the LAIR and the new carousel. Although not very specific, the LAIR is listed as opening in Winter 2011 and the carousel in August 2011. The map also shows the the construction area for Rainforest of the Americas.

Thanks Mario, when I visited a week ago, I failed to grab a map, even though I could tell from the cover that it had been updated. Did you notice that they moved the Steenbok to the much larger enclosure next to their former one?

I did notice that, although it's going to be almost impossible to see the little guys considering how shy they are...Other things I noticed was that there is now a Crested Caracara in the roundhouse with the Red-tailed Hawk and marsh birds, and the kookaburras were removed and the female Congo Peafowl took their place.

I did see and photograph the male Congo Peafowl in their usual enclosure, but failed to notice the removal of the Kookaburras from their exhibit, and replaced by the female Congo Peafowl.
