It's a very exciting time for the zoo with all the recent births (tigers, giant otters, komodo dragons, orangutan), events, and the upcoming openings of the carousel and the LAIR!

It was nice being back to the zoo after not going for almost two months, even though I mainly went for volunteering. I got to see the orangutan baby, but there was so many people that it was almost impossible to take photos. It was the same situation with the Giant Otter pups. I arrived when the otters were getting their daily swim, so the nursery was too crowded. The great news of the day is that I finally got to see the Slow Loris awake!!!

Today the zoo also had a soft-opening for the new carousel, which looks and sounds great. Like the article that I posted above mentions, the music is nothing you would expect a carousel to have, which is fitting for a zoo situated in the City of Angels! Also, hopefully this means that the days are numbered for the kiddie train by the bird show. I've never liked the look of the train (very cheap looking), so I'm hoping that the carousel will be so popular that the zoo won't need the train anymore...

I forgot to mention two things that I found out today. First of all, it is bad news, the zoo no longer has Giant Elands. I believe the male was put down because of old age, but I'm not sure what happened to the female. I saw on ISIS that the LA Zoo was not mentioned as having Giant Elands, but I was not sure if that was a mistake or not. Secondly, the zoo will soon be featured in Google Maps street view.

What a great mom Kalim is, I really enjoyed that. Thanks for sharing mstickmanp. I hope to get some great photos of Kalim and her new baby very soon.

Here is a new (and kind of funny) video showing the new Carousel. It also shows the kind of music that you will hear while riding it!

Another video was posted by the zoo showing how the Carousel was built:

Next snow days will be November 19-20, 2011.

(I will not be going, but anyone who does needs to be in line before the zoo opens and run to the snow leopards as soon as the gates open. From about 20 minutes after opening the exhibit will be packed with photographers and you will have virtually no chance of getting up to the guardrail.)

The zoo has a new website. I like everything except the animal section. I like how the old website had the animals grouped by orders/families. They also haven't added the zoo map yet.

EDIT: Nevermind, the only way to get to the map is to click "visit" first and then by clicking "Zoo map" next. The map has not been updated to show the carousel.

Sorry, I don't know. The LA Zoo website used to provide that information, but they recently changed it so the info is no longer there.

C.R. Laurence Co. has posted some photos of the custom doors they built for the LAIR in their flickr account here:

The door handles look great and this makes me more excited for the opening. The photo descriptions say they are from the gift shop, but I think they are from the LAIR.
