Thanks for the info!

When I was at the zoo this past saturday I got to see some of the babies: three RRH, the duiker (I saw two in the nursery), tufted deer, and capuchin monkey. They are all so cute, especially the tufted deer and monkey! There was also 6 white-face whistling ducklings that hatched in the lower aviary, but I couldn't find them. I did manage to take some photos of the Sarus Crane and tufted deer fawn that I'll post later.

I 'm so sad to see the Paca and chinese alligator leave...hopefully they can return once the reptile house and rain forest of the americas open.

Also, the two male tiger cubs left to Baton Rouge, not just one. And they didn't mention it, but the snow leopard cubs also left. The zoo is also planning to breed the chevrotains and crested oropendolas with the animals that arrived.

I'll checkout your latest photos. Especially the Tufted Deer fawn. I've been waiting for years to see them breed here. And some of the latest activities probably occurred in May and will be in the next issue of Zoo Scape.

So Mario, is the Tufted Deer fawn in the nursery yard, or the main exhibit? I couldn't spot it anywhere; not that they're the most commonly seen at the zoo. You know how scarce they can make themselves.

That's great news about the tiger cubs. Hopefully that means that we can now breed Lulu again. I have no formal confirmation on this, but a friend of mine who was at the zoo on Saturday (May 22) told me that the Fennec Fox in the Children's zoo had kits that day. Her source is generally reliable, but if anyone can confirm, that would be great.

I did notice that the area around their exhibit was closed off, but I don't know the exact reason.

That would be great news breeding the Fennec Foxes, and possibly a first here. Although they've been exhibited here before in years past. And thanks for the news about the young Tufted Deer Mario. I may make it out to the zoo this Memorial Day weekend, if I can get some time-off from my barbecuing. :D

the infamous Larry Johnson of Safari Enterprises got some of their Markhor. The largest animal dealer in the country! Guess since San Diego sends him a couple hundred animals a year, Los Angeles needs to jump on the wagon and start making the dealer some more money!!! Relay to your directors at Los Angeles, he needs animals with big horns! :)

Yep, most people don't know the dealers responsible for moving out hundreds of hoofstock a year. Read Alan Green's book "Animal Underworld". It gives a pretty good example of how things are done with zoos. Larry Johnson is responsible for moving thousands of animals all over the country and somehow it got out he killed two giraffes. Think how many times it has happened and nobody reported it to the media!

He is responsible for the rare exotics coming up on all the texas hunting ranches. Look at some of the hunting trophies on their websites and you'll find the ear notches. But San Diego doesn't care nor any other zoos because it never comes out in the media.

I can bet San Diego Zoo or SDWAP will make a statement saying the dealer is a great animal transporter and help resume his business activities. Hell if he goes out of business what will they do with all their surplus hoofstock?

That's great news, but I wonder what happened to the previous Babirusa and Markhor babies? Last time I was at the zoo they were still there.

I was at the zoo this morning, and last year's Markhor babies were on exhibit with the rest of family. Also, the babirusa piglets from last year were on exhibit. Mom and one baby was in the side yard.
