Blackduiker

Also, there are 2 baby pronghorns in the nursery. Probably born after the ZooScape cutoff date.

They were probably born in March, so that makes them less than a month old. They should make the next edition ZooScape. Thanks for the information polar bear. I'm overdue for another visit.

Now that she is gone I wonder what will be exhibited in that yard. Long ago there was rumors of switching the Giant Eland to that yard and then bringing in a group of Somali Wild Ass to the current Giant Eland yard, but that never happened.

Somali's would make a welcome addition to the collection. They were exhibited here back in the 1960s. The yard in question, actually was a second Giant Eland yard several years ago. And for many years before that exhibited a very successful breeding herd of Sable Antelopes.

Thanks for the news Blackduiker!

Will the LA Zoo be the only zoo in the Western Hemisphere with Hoolock gibbons? According to ISIS there is none in Europe and other North American zoos, with the only ones in India. That leads to another question, I wonder where they came from?

That's a good question. And what's strange is that less than a week ago, I was reading something on Hoolock Gibbon conservation which included a photo, and thinking; "wouldn't that be a nice species to exhibit and begin a breeding program with?" Now hopefully, they're not just passing through on a temporary basis in our quarantine facilities, and headed to another institution." And now that the Buff-cheeked Gibbons are in the African section of the zoo, and they're former roundhouse has been off-exhibit for some time. Could that space now be getting readied for the Hoolocks do you think?

I was told that the Hoolock gibbons are going where you said, i.e., the first roundhouse after the markhor. I keep poking my head in there, but haven't seen any change in the last couple of weeks.

One day, hopefully, a newly designed modern habitat for all our gibbons. But for now, with the excellent breeding success the zoo has had with Buff-cheeked Gibbons, the roundhouse should prove just fine for the Hoolocks.

Black Duiker, sorry to keep supplementing your list from ZooNews, but on May 5 (after the cutoff date) markhor twins were born. Two more does are pregnant and are expected to give birth at any time. I haven't been to the Zoo for about a week so one or both of the does may have given birth by now.

Polar bear, your supplements and updates are greatly appreciated. That's what ZooChat is all about, keeping members informed of the latest zoo news.

I went to the zoo yesterday and there is a second bighorn sheep lamb. The keeper said it was born about a week ago.

No more markhor kids yet.

My thoughts exactly. And since they were both females, it couldn't have been a breeding attempt unless plans to acquire a male fell through. Fortunately, I still plan to make the trip to the Gibbon Conservation Center, which is here in the Saugus area of Santa Clarita where I live. So I can possibly get a view of them then. It's just been a matter of the right date that fits my calendar, they have limited tour dates there.

Did the giant otter pups actually survive this time ? If so, this is there third litter now, no ? I know there was atleast one unsucessful birth before

Third litter, there were no surviving pups from the first two. The two current giant otter pups, a male and a female born on July 10th, had to be taken from the mother and supposedly went on exhibit a couple of days ago in the zoo's nursery.
