Chester Zoo Lily the Red Panda

Ok, I just can't hold it in any longer. Im just writing to ask if anyone has heard mention which zoo Lily the Red Panda is going to? The Red Panda enclosure is really empty without her :(:(

It's decided by the studbook co-ordinator and although the zoo(s) involved will have the final say it probably won't be announced until after she has gone

By the looks they do. I would hazard a Guess Chota and Angelina are there existing pair as the article says a new breeding pair. At least if Lily is going there its not too far to travel to see her grow up. Will send them a message and see :) .

Just found out from Dublin that Chota was from Chester? And Angelina is from Berlin Zoo, so still dont know where Lily will go. I was making plans in my head of a weekend to Dublin lol :)

Chota was one of the 2:0 born at Chester in 2008. He was moved to Dublin in early 2009 and this is his first breeding season as a mature male

A post on the Facebook page suggests that Lily will be sent to a zoo in Sweden. Which is great for the breeding programme I suppose, but sad for anyone in the UK who hoped to see her again someday. :(

It is very sad news :(
It's not sad news*. It is a sign of a successful breeding programme. Do red pandas have such individual personalities that it matters anyway? Perhaps to other red pandas maybe. There are plenty more red pandas in the UK and I'm sure more will be born at Chester before long.

*just in case Tarsius is thinking of posting a lament :)

:( Its very sad for me as I saw her grow up and was the first to see her as a cub, and I get attached to animals. It would have been nice for her to be in a UK zoo so I can visit and watch her grow up and have her own babies. So sorry if my humanity offends you. Ive seen most of the Red Pandas in the UK and love them all individually. Maybe this site isnt worth bothering with!

Agreed. For those of us who spent hours upon hours waiting for a first glimpse then watching her grow the fact she is leaving the country is sad. I like Red would of loved to have been able to visit her and watch her grow and have babies of her own. Hopefully someone on here from the Zoo she is going to will keep us updated with pictures on how she is getting on.

Your humanity doesn't offend me, and I hope I didn't offend you. It's just like growing up, the kids have got to leave home eventually :)

That's the same reason I feel sad - I first saw her on June 29th, got quite a few photos of her then :) when did you first see her? Pretty sure I saw you at her enclosure every time I was! :D

Hi TeaLovingDave!

I was at the zoo every week (sometimes twice) from mid June onwards, thats when I found out about her birth). The first time I saw Lily and Lushui bringing her out of the den was on the 24th July, I really got some shaky footage as Id never seen a baby Red before and it was such a dream come true :) The best footage I got of her was the 2nd August, that's when my fiancé took the picture that would be in the Mirror and the zoo membership (autumn) It was such a wonderful experience :)

I've got about 20 videos on Youtube and have a little (a very little) following of other zoo enthusiasts who loved watching Lily and her progression as she grew up into the beautiful Red that she is!

Its hard not to get attached especially when you see them every week :)

I somewhat agree with this (though not necessarily about red pandas). Yes I will miss Lily, but I'm not upset about her leaving as 1) it's for the best since it means she can breed over there, and Chester can breed more, and 2) Red pandas don't do much [well, in Summer at least - Winter is better]. However, this is an animal you are so obviously attached to, and there is no reason you can't get attached to individuals.

I'm looking at it with the viewpoint of 'how would I be feeling if I learnt that Puluh was moving to another country :p)

Yeah the same can be said of my photos from the 29th - especially shaky as I didn't even know there had been a birth and was just walking past the enclosure when Lushui emerged with Lily, prompting a very hurried scramble for my camera!

Yeah, she is a valuable female input into the breeding population, after all :)
