List of Zoochat Members Wanting to Found a Zoo

If anyone does found a "zoo" in their back garden, I strongly advise you NOT to use the publicity of Brazilian conservation NGO's on your website whilst falsely claiming to support our conservation efforts financially through donations.

There is a "zoo" outside of a major UK city which I won't name (you know who you are, I know you will read this and know that we are fully aware of what you are doing and will address it through the appropriate channels in due course) who has done this multiple times and as such has revealed themselves to be a total charlatan and con artist (I want to use some stronger words but will resist the temptation).

Like most users on here, 'he' hides his true identity behind a pseudonym.
If you can find out who he is, then you will soon see why as 'Childonias' has said, he is not likely to reply.
In the meantime, this thread really ought to moved to the 'fantasy' section...
You made me consider, briefly, whether I should still be using a pseudonym. Decided to stick with it, as it’s not difficult for the ‘right’ people to work out who I am:)

I'm from the time when having a silly name on the Internet was part of the fun. But I do agree that complete anonymity can be an issue (which is why on here I have my FB/Twitter account names in my profile should anyone feel a burning desire to know my name and to hold myself to account - on the old forum software there was even a direct link to them on every post).

Location: Eastern United States
Species intended to be held: Mostly smaller animals, with a few larger ones to help bring in the crowd.
Timeframe for opening: 10+ years
Collaboration: Yes
Restraint for opening: Financial and I want some experience working with exotic animals.

This zoo is something I would start off small with a few small exotic animals and a petting zoo, nothing crazy. Over time as the zoo becomes more popular, I would start to add more exhibits. I would help take care of the animals, but I would also hire staff. As the zoo gets bigger, I will also start to move some of the animals around so they are closer to animals from their region. For educational purposes, I will have daily animal talks and at least one educational sign for each exhibit about ways people can help save the animals and their native habitat. I don't have major plans to make this a huge zoo with thousands of animals, just a small zoo where people can learn about animals.

Location: Not selected
Species intended to be held: birds, hoofstock, small mammals (including primates and carnivores), kangaroos, herps that I like. Some of the herps would be rehomes/"rescues". No big cats (especially lions) and cheetahs, no red pandas and no marine fish.
Timeframe for opening: idk
Collaboration: Probably
Restraint for opening: Terrible self esteem, little to no experience with animals, animals I would like are probably difficult to obtain depending on where I want to build my zoo, and I don't have a job.

Ideally I would start this collection with a partner who is as into animals as me. I would probably be a breeder/collector before my facility even becomes a zoo and if I do become a zoo I would be a no-breed facility unless I care enough to be a righteous conservation center. If I do become a conservation center and start breeding rare animals I would call my facility "Foundation for Advocating Random or Threatened Species". I say "random" because I would also keep non-threatened species, such as brush-tailed possums and civets, that I like making them "random".

The name would sound a little better with the random dropped as "Foundation for Advocacy of Threatened and Endangered species" (FATES - has a good ring / sound to it, right ?) .

I don't think the random really needs to be specified as even zoos that have a strong conservation ethos and maintain collections of largely endangered species like Jersey also have their meerkats and a few other species that are non-threatened.

Lots of wishful thinking and nice dreams! Anyone thought about many hidden costs, such as insurance? (If you can get it!) Once established the more species you have the more it will cost to maintain. The larger the animal the more it usually eats, and if the cost of providing hays etc., is anything as high as it in Australia at present the food bill is very high.

I don't want my organization to sound heroic and powerful either :^)

o_O Then I don't know what you want in terms of a name.

But I hope you achieve your dreams and most importantly never forget that if you call a place a conservation center make sure it is a conservation center and not just a con.

You sound like a good kid so I know you wont do the latter and that you will be committed and walk the walk.

I mean, the reason I would build this zoo is because I want to keep animals, not because I want to be a "self aggrandizing" conservationist. This isn't to say that I wont take part in or support conservation projects. I would definitely raise funds to donate to conservation projects for species that I wouldn't want gone. But the main goal of my zoo would still be displaying animals that I like which I think are also under appreciated by the general public.

But don't worry if I ever reach my goals I wont pretend to give money to non existing projects or give false promises to struggling projects.

Might I ask why? Is it because that plan would include more common species instead of the foundation for threatened species approach?
I should have been more elaborate with the breeding. I would breed some of my animals but not all of them. This is because if I am to start as a private owner buying from private breeders, I wouldn't know the lineage of the animals of the collection which is why I would avoid breeding the animals in question (especially primates). I would breed animals that happen to be founders/imports or animals that are domestic.

Well I appreciate your honesty in that but I don't think it is self aggrandizement to be passionate about conservation and neither should you.

We live in a pale and inert age and one corrosively addicted to irony, cynicism and nihilism ( thanks to postmodernism) and therefore a lot of people are way too cautious of earnestness and passion.
