List of Zoochat Members Wanting to Found a Zoo

I'm currently 2-3 years away from being able to start construction, going off of my current financial status.
Still with the aim to showcase plenty of birds in Alberta?
This sounds fun, so I might as well chime in too ;)

1. Intended Location of zoo: Alberta, Canada. Ideally somewhere close to Edmonton to ensure a steady guest base.

2. Species Intended to be held: Birds. Lots of birds. Emphasis will be placed on certain species groups (e.g turacos, cranes), as well as species struggling in the dreaded red SSP category. Other, non-avians, such as macropods and elasmobranchs will feature as well.

3. Time frame for building/opening: 2-4 years if all goes well.

4. Open to collaboration with others: Eh, with the right individual(s) yes, but realistically no.

5. Biggest restraint if not opening in the next 2 years: I have one last "bucket list" species group I want to work with before I bear down and dedicate myself to my own facility. That list would be:

Penguins
Hornbills
Elephants
Cetaceans

I've worked with the first three, just need to tick off that last one now, and I worry that if I don't try and finish this list before I bear down towards my own facility, the regret of "never knowing" will eat at me for the rest of my life. Fingers crossed I'll be able to check off cetaceans this year, which will of course hasten the timeline to open (or maybe not, depending on how much I enjoy the position ;) )

The other "restraint", I suppose, would be if I can manage to land a good position at one particular facility (that happens to have a variety of species I enjoy working with, pays incredibly well and offers decidedly good benefits), that could potentially drag out the timeline to open into the 5-10 year category, since I'm not completely daft, I'll take (and keep) a good thing if I can get it, after all!

That's the plan!

In the past two years, I have revised a bit about just how bird heavy I would like the collection, but around 50% of the planned species for the park would still be birds.

Despite my crazy fantasy projects that some here on the forum know of, I'd always wanted to realistically found a small zoo and ideally grow if possibilities arise, not saying worldwide class(San Diego, Pairi Daiza) but something along the lines of Hellabrunn:

1. Intended location: somewhere near the coasts of Sardinia, Italy, with a mitigated climate good for a broad variety of animals.

2. Intended species: I'd like my establishment to be a sanctuary for those rarer species in EAZA that are indicated as "phase out" or just in few zoos, as I do not encourage the phase out of any animal, so that zoos that struggle with keeping a studbook of these rare animals can have a structure on which they can rely on, as well as few crowd-pleaser species and species that need new holding strategies.

3. Time frame: I'd say optimistically 3 years, but it's Italy so you may as well round it to 8:D:rolleyes:.

4.Collaboration: as mentioned above I'd very much be glad to help zoos that try to keep biodiverse collections but struggle with collaboration and space.

5. Biggest restrain for the next 2 years: I have always dug up the internet in search of the requirements to open or at least work in a zoo, and the answer always comes down to two factors: money in the first case and experience in the second (as well as money to pay my studies), so first I'll have to work and make my name through the zoological world, then I could start building or keep my work in an institution I like.

For that, you'd have to become an EAZA member - which isn't easy for a novel zoo. And quite expensive.

Regarding 4. : Citizen conservation might be of interest to you.

I could start with very common animals and then phase them out as soon as I enter in EAZA, which I know will require a good amount of time before happening, and get animals that are common in the pet trade but rare in zoos, much like you did:D

I don't get what you're trying to say to me...
Edit: googled it, would you be willing to enlighten me about this organization?

You're better off aiming for UIZA membership than EAZA.
And no offence - many of the animals I keep are not that "common in the pet trade", as you put it.

And no offence to you too but UIZA is pretty much a joke, I'd gladly wait more to enter in EAZA first, then, perhaps later down the line I'll join UIZA
It won't work like that. Good luck, anyway.

Citizen conservation is an umbrella term for several projects that involve private dedicated and knowledgable people to join planned and organized ex situ breeding programs of species that are otherwisely largerly ignored by zoos. The German DGHT, for example, offers such a program involving mostly amphibians.

Sounds like you aren’t willing to compromise. That is not an attitude you want if you are serious about reaching your goals. This goes for things other than owning a zoo as well.

1. Intended Location of the zoo: Groot Marico, South Africa

2. Species Intended to be held: Anything I can get my hands on really, hopefully, some rare exotics and South African endemics.

3. Time frame for building/opening: I don't intend on ever becoming public, more of a side hobby, having to rely on cattle and game farming as my main income. I have already started to collect some animals, all common, but nonetheless, a good start. Currently, I keep, 1.0 Crested Gecko, 0.0.6 Emu, 3.16 impala ( As well as a separate, wild herd that I don't monitor) and hope to obtain a flock of mandarin ducks within the next year.
4. Open to collaboration with others: Always!

5. Biggest restraint if not opening in the next 2 years: As mentioned above, I don't intend on ever opening to the public, but what is stopping me from going all-out and getting everything I desire to get, is, as I suspect is the problem with most people.... time and money.

From my (trustworthy) source I know that for a fact there is almost no collaboration amongst italian zoological structures besides the exchange of specimens, so if I had to join that would ease my path into EAZA, but I'd pay double to get half of the rewards

1. Intended Location of the zoo: Florida USA

2. Species Intended to be held: Insects and reptiles of different varieties. Currently I hold several arachnids and will be expanding those holdings within the next two months to include scorpions.

3. Time frame for building/opening: Realistically, within 5 years, hopefully.

4. Open to collaboration with others: Yes, it will be necessary for designing habitats and animal care.

5. Biggest restraint if not opening in the next 2 years: Logistics and design. Let's be real, designing something like this takes time. I have started on the basics, but lining up the facility, money, and designs will take time

This is planned to primarily be an insect zoo of sorts. I don't want to give too much of the full ideas out as I am actively planning this and think it is a really good idea that could expand to other cities using the same ideas.

I never really intend to open this realistic zoo myself but I thought this would be a good idea -

1. Intended Location of the zoo:
Western Ireland, a rural zoo although somewhere close to either Limerick or Galway

Reasoning - Ireland for a country with 5 million people (similar to New Zealand) really only has two major zoos, Dublin Zoo and Fota Wildlife Park so a third major zoo in the west of the country is needed and wouldn't have any local competition.

2. Species Intended to be held:
Not specific species but more or less themed areas, I would like to have in this theoretical zoo include -

Ice Age Ireland - Instead of an African Savanna area (which exists in almost every zoo) I think an open area featuring extant species as stand-ins for their extinct relatives would be more interesting and unique (akin to San Diego's Elephant Odyssey). As far as I'm aware we haven't seen a European version of this concept yet?

Some feature species you could include -
Asian Elephant (Woolly Mammoth)
Indian Rhino (Woolly Rhino)
Przewalski's Horse (Ice age horses)
Bison (either species, whatever is easiest to get)
Reindeer
Moose (Irish Elk)
Heck Cattle (Aurochs)
African Lion (Cave Lion)
Spotted Hyena (Cave Hyena)
Eurasian Wolves
Brown Bear

Patagonia - Patagonian-themed areas are very rare in zoos so I'd like to see a well-done one.

Some feature species you could include -
Cougar
Guanaco
Mara
Andean Condor
Rhea
Culpeo
and even South American Sea Lions if possible

The Atlantic - Since this theoretical zoo is on Ireland's west coast bordering the Atlantic I thought a trail-like area, walking visitors along the length of the Atlantic and showcasing some of the species found in and around it would be cool.

Some feature species you could include -
South American Sea Lion
African Penguin
Golden lion tamarin (Atlantic Forest)
Gemsbok (Skeleton coast Namibia)
Grey seal
Arctic Fox (Iceland)
An aquarium
etc. this idea could be taken in a lot of different ways

3. Time frame for building/opening: In the next 20 - 25 years. Realistically before another zoo is opened in this untapped region of Ireland or before ever-increasing global biosecurity laws make opening new zoos incredibly difficult.

4. Open to collaboration with others: Obviously this would be a large project so major investment and collaboration would be necessary.

5. Biggest restraint if not opening in the next 2 years: Logistics, finances, general interest, and government support. A lot of theoretical things could be an issue for this realistic but theoretical zoo.

Location: Somewhere in northern British Columbia

Species Intended to be Held: Anything I can get, though I've already started a list

Time Frame: 5-10 years from now (hopefully)

Open to Collaboration: Always, someone whose willing to help is welcome anytime.

Biggest Restraint if not Opened in next 2 years: Probably finances.

I need help deciding what animals to start of with. They need to be animals that I can get without AZA accreditation. Here are the regions/exhibits:
Africa
South America
Australia
Reptile house
2 walk through aviaries (Africa and Australia)
A few stand alone aviaries
Are there any specific regions of these continents you want to focus on, or just generally Africa, South America, and Australia?
