ZSL London Zoo London Zoo News 2023

London Zoo's map has received an update, as can be seen on the website (not sure if the printed maps and boards at the zoo have been updated as of yet). It shows the Chinese Water Deer and the Ostrich, and makes mention of the Reptile House's upcoming closure. It has also relabelled 'Meerkats and Otters,' as 'Mongooses and Otters,' although rather frustratingly, the icon still shows a meerkat, and there isn't such an icon in Animal Adventure, where meerkats are indeed displayed. Other than that, it looks good, and I think the water deer icon in particular looks excellent.

And a hummingbird in the Bird House - maybe we can dream?
Unfortunately, I doubt this means anything - Amazilia Hummingbirds were kept in Blackburn Pavilion in 2014, and perhaps they justified not changing this on the basis that most visitors could easily mistake other birds, such as sunbirds, for hummers. This error has been on the map for so long that I suppose I have just become immune to it.

On the bright side, London's map has, unlike Whipsnade's, not omitted some of its most notable species (gaur, warty pigs, rheas etc), and I maintain that both are the best-looking maps produced by any UK zoo that I know of.

Iirc Windsor Safari had a hummingbird house.
I wonder what happened to hummingbirds in the UK?

I remember them well, they were a perfect species for that room!

Agree wholeheartedly about the maps, they are charming and very good looking.

On a sad note, the Reptile House will close at the end of the month.
While I am excited for the new house, I am saddened by the lose of such a historic building. Have they given any recent clues what they intend on using the building for?

The latest ZSL Annual Report confirms the new reptile/amphibian building will house 31 species, including Mangshan viper, Philippine crocodile and Chinese giant salamander.
What's this compared to the current house if anyone knows?
