A freind of mine went to Longleat on 13th August and was able to get the following news

A male Rothschild Giraffe was born at the end of July. He is the park's first calf since Henry in 2007 and the first from ex Woburn bull, Doto. On the day my freind visited another female had gone into labour although by the time he left the calf hadn't been born. Another four calves are due in the next month or so. The member of staff he spoke to couldn't remember who the mother of the latest calf was or which of the female's were pregnant. Henry from 2007 is still waiting to be transfered elsewhere.

Another Zebra foal has been born. This takes the total to 0:1:1 this year :)

As has been reported elsewhere the new pair of Ostrich, Gavin and Stacey have produced there first clutch of four chicks. Don't know whats happend to Trevor  12 Flamingo have also hatched, A record for Longleat's group who only bred for the first time in 2009.

Sadly the suspected rhino pregnancy from late last year turned out to be internal cysts :( They have now mated again and hopes are high that sometime in the next few years they will finally breed.
The park is currently trying to source an additional 2:0 White Rhino to try and make this happen.

The Giant Anteater in the Animal Adventure is currenty off show

The current "mini safari" under construction (on the site of the former Pets Corner) will be named the Jungle Experience and is expected to open in 2011. No details on species it will house yet.

2:0 African Lions will arrive before the end of the year to join pride B. I know where they have been sourced from but won't reveal it at this stage.

The 0:3 tigers are doing fine :)

Jessie the tapir is still awaiting a new partner after the death of Jethro earlier this year.

Future plans for the park are currently been drawn up. Cheetah are being disscussed as a possibilty although they aren't definete yet.

I'm hoping to go myself at the end of August so if anyone has questions I will try and answer them

Forgot to add that it is now thought that monkey's contracted the herpes virus by people thowing infected food from there cars to them. The drive past area will probably open in 2011 but until then the area is closed off.

Will be really nice to see a couple of baby giraffes at the weekend. Also the addition of the second zebra calf. Will make the East Africa section a nice place to try and get some photo's. As long as it is not chucking it down.

If I get a chance to ask will do so and post on Sunday.

Just seen a piece on BBC24, showed both newborns. Kiaser and the yet un named female. Really looking forward to Saturday. The wife is really interested in Giraffes. She has no idea about the new arrivals.

Thanks for the news, shame about the rhinos though, but awesome to hear that new male lions are coming in.

Hope the return of elephants are in the future plans. ;) (And the Doctor Who Exhibition!)

Hi mazfc
I went to Longleat on August 3rd. Nico was out on the island and looked fine. The keeper on the boat said he is well. He's enjoying his TV - hated the World Cup - doesn't like Eastenders or Animal Park! The keeper said his favourite programme is Sponge Bob

I am glad the Longleat Safari Park is looking beyond its borders and diversifying like many other trad safari operation set ups.

The cheetah introduction would completely fit the set up. Look forward to any other ideas and plans re. new species (thinking of that ... can think of both African and Asian spp. that would benefit the park).

Thank you Rita, that's lovely to hear :)

Just read in their e-mail newsletter that the CBBC show Roar will be ditching the Aspinall Parks and moving to Longleat this year, presumably to make up for Animal Park being cancelled (or are they swapping? ;))

Roar from longleat will be great, can't get enough bob and Brian! But has animal park been cancelled? Oh no! That's not good news at all.

And how will I get my aspinall fix, as it's so far away from me?

Basically ran its course. It had been filming for 10 years, and I think all ground had been covered. That and I think the BBC had cuts to make, and Animal Park was one of the losers :(

I love watching programmes about zoos on the telly, but Animal Park got really repetitive towards the end. I seriously believe they squeezed every drop out of longleat, Kate Humble must have done about ten features just on the ferrets alone. Filming them with miniature cameras and heat sensitive cameras.....yawn. (I'm not having a go at Longleat, just the show)

However, I absolutely love Roar, even if it is 'kid friendly'. In fact I love the idea of them producing an Animal Park type show based on the Aspinall collections, if indeed that is what they plan on doing.

I would like to see one of the safari parks try a South American drive through, with say vicuna, rhea (Darwins or lesser) and mara.
With maybe Brazilian tapirs too and even maned wolves in satellite enclosures.

im visiting longleat in october should be good i would love to see more species at the safari park and what is going to happen to gorilla island when nico dies?
