A freind of mine went to Longleat on 13th August and was able to get the following news
A male Rothschild Giraffe was born at the end of July. He is the park's first calf since Henry in 2007 and the first from ex Woburn bull, Doto. On the day my freind visited another female had gone into labour although by the time he left the calf hadn't been born. Another four calves are due in the next month or so. The member of staff he spoke to couldn't remember who the mother of the latest calf was or which of the female's were pregnant. Henry from 2007 is still waiting to be transfered elsewhere.
Another Zebra foal has been born. This takes the total to 0:1:1 this year
As has been reported elsewhere the new pair of Ostrich, Gavin and Stacey have produced there first clutch of four chicks. Don't know whats happend to Trevor
12 Flamingo have also hatched, A record for Longleat's group who only bred for the first time in 2009.
Sadly the suspected rhino pregnancy from late last year turned out to be internal cysts
They have now mated again and hopes are high that sometime in the next few years they will finally breed.
The park is currently trying to source an additional 2:0 White Rhino to try and make this happen.
The Giant Anteater in the Animal Adventure is currenty off show
The current "mini safari" under construction (on the site of the former Pets Corner) will be named the Jungle Experience and is expected to open in 2011. No details on species it will house yet.
2:0 African Lions will arrive before the end of the year to join pride B. I know where they have been sourced from but won't reveal it at this stage.
The 0:3 tigers are doing fine
Jessie the tapir is still awaiting a new partner after the death of Jethro earlier this year.
Future plans for the park are currently been drawn up. Cheetah are being disscussed as a possibilty although they aren't definete yet.
I'm hoping to go myself at the end of August so if anyone has questions I will try and answer them
