Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2011

Also I don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but this year Longleat are introducing a new 'day ticket', cheaper than the passport and allows you to do every attraction however many times you like in the day you visit; so a cure to those who have complained here about only being able to go round the safari park once. :)

that's the one thing that has stopped me visiting longleat for quite a few years, the fact that you can only do the safari park once, and so this is a much better ticket. They must have listened to feedback.

New manager

Not sure if this is the right thread to add this but my dog walking friend has just telephoned me to say that he was told yesterday that the Safari park at Longleat has a new manager a vet from Marwell Zoo?
Not sure what this means to Longleat but my wife and I will visit sooner rather than later now we can go into the Safari and on the boats more than once.
Thank you.

Does anybody have any information about the baby three banded Armadillo born this year it was featured on this weeks Roar forgot what episode.

I went to Longleat today and i noticed a few things.

The Cheetahs will be going between the Lions and Wolves and their house is in the process of being built.

There is a Fourth Tiger, I dont know if this is a male to breed? As I have read on here they r hybrids and wont be bred from. This 1 was seperate from the other three.

There are new Lions (I think 5) in quarantine until May, that have come from Germany.

I saw 7 Bactrian camel, I see some fo you in the previous threads had wondered what happened to numbers in the herd.

And the Monkey Temple which was due to be open at the end of March is still very much a building site, so I dont know when this will be open.

Hope the flamingos breed well again this year at this rate they will have a very large flock if they hatch a dozen chicks like last year!

Longleat`s former "animal manager/curator" Keith Harris left and Jon Cracknell , marwell`s former zoo director, is now head of animal operations at Longleat.

So is he responsible for the new attractions and investment in Longleat this year? There seem to be some big projects going on. Do we know what happened to Keith Harris?

Jon Cracknell is a vet who has worked for ZSL and was former zoological director of Marwell Wildlife and veterinary advisor to the British & Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria elephant focus group. So this would suggest there is going to be some major zoological investment at Longleat.

There is a one-liner in here which refers to new male Gorillas coming soon.

I would hazard a guess here to say they may be the four males, ages ranging from 8-12, which were recently transferred out of Kifu's group at Howletts and are now at Port Lympne;

Kanghu(99)Kebu(00)Kouyou(02) & Fubu(03).

I can't see where else they are likely to be able to obtain them from.

Nothing much happened during his time at Marwell though and then suddenly he left!

I have never worked with him so only make a judgement based on bio postings on zoo sites. Perhaps Longleat made him a good offer. The park just seem to be investing and upgrading after a number of years of treading water so to speak. Interesting to see where all this goes.

Confirmed:
Longleat will take delivery of Anne the Asian Elephant within a week. She's already been cleared to travel and work has begun on creating a suitable enviroment for her

Coincidence that it's almost eight years to the day (12 March 2003) since the last Longleat herd of Africans were shipped to Beauval, France. When they left several staff commented that they didn't want to see the park have anymore elephants due to the upset generated over the herd being moved. I wonder how they feel about Anne's imminant arrival?

Good to see Anne moving to a more suitable home where she can have her needs met. And yes I wonder what the elephant staff make of it. No doubt losing their Elephants was heartbreaking. Lets hops there is more investment now, so that the elephants can come back.
