Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2012

If you re-read the thread thoroughly you would notice a posting the gorilla move(s) have been deferred at least till end July ...

Full plans and drawings for the Gorilla exhibit.

Now this is the interesting bit... whilst I went looking for the above, I also stumbled across this application. Granted in October 2002 it gave permission for a new elephant house and yard. Now what I'd like to know is why Longleat went to the trouble of putting in an application for this (and getting it granted) only to relocate the elephants to France less than six months later? (March 2003)

Presumbly after the application was made they had a change of heart/management or other decision about the keeping of the Elephants, so that the planning consent when it came was irrelevant.

re the Gorillas- the current and seemingly perpetual wet weather may have held up the finishing touches a bit.

African Village is now open according to Longleat's latest newsletter. Including the Lemur Walkthrough and Giraffe feeding (which costs an extra £2 to do!)

Is there any indication as to whether 'Kesho' and 'Alf' (Gorillas) are arriving soon? Longleat currently now already have Boulas from Twycross, so it would seem that;

A. Oumbie is staying at Twycross and not moving to Longleat as originally posted.

B. Longleat have started bringing in the new bachelor group of Gorillas for their new exhibit.

Went to Longleat yesterday and the keeper on the boat said they now have two new gorillas but sorry i can not remember there names. They have not been let out yet but are settling in very well

It's probably 'Alf' from Dublin who's arrived. If it was Kesho then I'm sure somebody would have noticed he'd gone.

I'd suggest the opposite: The infomation was that it would be both "Alf" and "Sekondi" that would travel from Dublin. Makes far more sense to bring them over together than one at a time...

If Kesho has only transfered during the past week then it's very possible that his move hasn't been picked up simply because no zoochat members have been to London this week and ZSL haven't issued a press release yet!

Even if no Zoochatters or if ZSL haven't issued a press release, I'm sure somebody will have said something on Facebook.

Kesho's move is confirmed on the ZSL thread. IMO they have definately made the right decision in moving him though I'm not so sure about the choice of replacement. (we will find out soon enough:) ) I think poor old Kesho and Boulas have now seen the last females they are ever likely to:( and that they will both stay at Longleat probably for the rest of their lives.

It is to be applauded that Longleat is prepared to take on that role for the foreseeable future (and thankfully in a larger exhibit than previous group has been kept in).

Have they improved the behavioral enrichment stuff yet?

If Longleat wanted to exhibit more Gorillas, a bachelor group is really the only realistic way they would get them I think- at least for starters. Despite mention of 'females later' for a 2nd group I would be surprised to see that happen soon(ever?) Setting up this all male group at Longleat performs both another useful male holding and is an additional attraction or them-so every one is a winner(except the male Gorillas....;) )

I don't know if any extra stuff has been added to the enclosure but its spacious and quite adequate-looking as it is.

'Gorilla Colony'

'End of term' T.V adverts for Longleat currently appearing on my T.V. screen feature Cheetahs, African Village, Monkey Temple(looks like just little Marmosets in there) Birds of Prey and 'Gorilla Colony.' The two shots of Gorillas used for that bit look like they were filmed elsewhere, in advance of the ones at Longleat arriving- but they must be on show now/pretty soon if they are advertising them publicly like this.

Gorillas.

From the London thread, confirmation that all four Gorillas (Boulas, Kesho, Alf, Evindi) are now at Longleat. I thought they must be as the new 'Gorilla Colony' has featured on their T.V. adverts so must be up and running for the Boat tours already.

In the very short time they've had them I presume maybe they have not had all four together yet. But in the meantime they will probably get away with just two, or singles, being outdoors at anytime on show.

From some photos I have seen Kesho, Alf and Evindi all outdoors. I presume that Boulas and Kesho won't be mixed, or could they?

I'm sure if Kesho has been remixed with his brothers, it will have been an easy reunion. I think they probably hope/will try to get Boulas with the others. Kesho is the main problem but he is so much younger than Boulas, who is very calm nowadays, that he may respect him and they will get along fine. But I really have no idea if it would work.
