Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2023

Hi first time to longleat tomorow .. any advice as to how to spend our day? Want to make the most since only have 1 day, but if we enjoy we may go back in summer
Maybe you should visit the house. A tour is an hour long, Depending on which guide you have, and the tickets are decently priced.

Hey all! Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but I was at Longleat the other day and I was in for a nice surprise-a young Gambian pouched rat!

Paid a visit to Longleat on Monday 26 June. Here are some notes I made:

- Kinkajou signage has changed to that of a baby Kinkajou- Maybe a baby has been born?!

- Former Great horned owl aviary has been Fitted with some logs as perching Beams. Signage was also seen, but too far away to be read.

- In former Veiled chameleon/ three banded armadillo enclosure, something is being set up. A tree in a pot, bark and a crate full of water could be seen. possibly for Gambian pouched rat, as I saw one in here last week.

Longleat now have a 7th koala called Yani. Shes come from Hong Kong and they now have all the known southern koalas outside of Australia. (Apprently Burke may have some children floating around Europe that noone knows off.)

Space is now tight with Dennis in the pen on his own by the Otters. Violet, Hazel, Maizie and Monty in the big cage on the middle and Burke and Yani in the other one (but it's been split on half)

They can only keep Monty with the girls for another 4/5 months so not sure what they plan to do when that time comes.

One would hope he would move on to another collection, increasing the number that hold the species. But Longleat could always expand the enclosures, given they certainly have the money for it and there is a section of free space. Maybe even share with Ellie?

And can’t Monty still breed with violet / Yani since they aren’t related together but he just can’t go in with hazel ( same dad) and his mum Mazie! So their is hope he can stay or they send him back to oz for even more opportunities for breeding!

I think they'll try Dennis with Hazel/violet/Maizie. I think they'll move Monty on somewhere else eventually.

I assume this will be covered on animal park this year

I think it has too, as we counted 7 koala when we visited in June but couldn’t work out who was new, and their wasn’t a keeper to ask! But I’m glad as Yani partner died in 2018 so she been alone so this at least give her Koala friends to pair up with

Both would definitely be reasonable courses of action in the near future moving forward with this species in Europe/the UK, and could potentially even be used alongside each other as Longleat have quite the group now! One thing about the collection of individuals they have now is that there are only four biological connections of related animals out of the seven total koalas, so they could easily be split up into two or three breeding groups with 3 males and 4 females present, potentially allowing multiple collections to house breeding groups as well.

Be interesting to know if they'll cover the lion attack from January but it'll be great to see coverage of Monty's arrival
