Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2023

Alright, I've done some (very much surface level) digging and I reckon I've found an answer to our hippo-based queries.

It would appear that in 1967, the year the boat first started running across the lake, the park acquired a group of 4 chimpanzees (assumedly to live on what would later be Nico's island), as well as 3 hippos. Having watched the episode and seen that there's footage of 3 of them in black-and-white, my conclusion is that 3 originally arrived in '67 followed by Spot and Sonia around a decade later. This lines up with the comment about the keepers being able to sit on the other hippos but not the recent two, which already suggested they were separate groups. So I'm guessing it's a mistake in the narration to say 5 arrived at once, and instead it was a maximum of 5 held in one go.

That's enough hippo research for one night :D

Edit: More excavation of old Zoochat threads has occurred and I've come across this video
from the year after the initial group arrived. Incredible and ever so slightly mental to watch

Enjoying the detective work I have to say. The video is mad - there’s a bloke riding a hippo!

Assuming that’s a (younger) Ian Turner narrating, and riding the hippo? (which he alluded to in yesterday’s episode)

Absolutely fascinating! Was this footage part of a series? I’ve never seen it before.

I don’t think it’s Ian turner speaking in the video it doesn’t sound like him - based on what was said on animal park the other day it sounds like three came from Africa in ‘76 which would add up to Ian mentioning the hippo they called one ear which I’m assuming is Nigalo.

While digging YouTube I found this video from the early days which also shows king penguins in half mile lake along with the sea lions - I can’t see them having lasted long.

How many calves were produced, and what became of them?
"Spot" and "Sonia" both had two calves each as follows:

"Spot"
  • Male "Invincible" born ?? Sept 1982
  • Male "Harvey" born 13th Oct 1983
"Sonia"
  • Male "Nautilus" born 25th Sept 1982
  • Male "Walley" born 4th Sept 1984
Sadly none of the calves, except "Harvey", lived any length of time and even "Harvey" didn't live long for a hippo.

I'm currently travelling home after a visit to Whipsnade Zoo; will provide more details later this evening.

Of the four hippo calves mentioned in my previous post:

"Harvey" was the longest lived of the four; he died at West Midlands Safari Park on 1st February 2002.

The other three were short lived animals.

"Nautilus" was killed by the bull "Nigalo" (the father of all four calves) on 26th September 1982, the day after he was born.

"Invincible" died on 14th May 1983.

From memory - Harvey would have been the last entire bull that West Midlands had. They stopped breeding after he died, exported 0.2 to Flamingo Land and retained the rest of the females as a none breeding group.

Funnily enough Ernie, the (castrated) bull they have now was Harvey's final calf. Born after his mother was shipped to Flamingo Land and unexpectedly gave birth soon after. FL had him castrated and kept him until West Midlands took him back last year (to allow FL an opportunity to hold a breeding male)

Just watching Friday's animal park. While feeding the wolves Caleb says "Hazel and the girls are up front" have them put the other girls in with the pack now?

Last time I went I noticed the other wolf pen was covered over on the fence.

I'm also catching up with last week's episodes(episode 2) Hazel is the omly female in the pack apparently, so presumably the other 2 girls (M & M) are kept separate

Two female wolves went to CWP (which I think will be included in one of the episodes) in exchange for the wolves there. The covered area may have been for the arrivals.

One of the new CWP wolves has the top of her ear missing if that means anything to Longleat folk.

Introducing the newest addition to our pack: Terry the wolf
Terry joins our European wolves over in the Safari Drive-through in the hopes of expanding the family. Meet him and find out more about his journey by tuning into Animal Park this summer...

That's interesting as on today's episode I saw a glimpse of a wolf that appeared to have part of an ear missing during the clips that are shown between the main stories. Could this be the one?

I think that’s her and the same in that Longleat clip I posted but there might be more than one missing ear in the pack! They mentioned the transfer is featured in an episode so that should confirm it.
